In 2013 I wrote a book called Seven Myths about Education.

What is the most persistent myth, the one that is hardest to kill, and the one that has biggest implications outside education?

Transferable skills.

People think that you can teach things like critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, etc. But you can't.

But the idea is so persistent not just in schools but in universities, the corporate world and the British civil service.

@SamuelVimes10 Future FIL has been hospitalised recently for severe aortic stenosis (should have been picked up earlier - congenital and known about) and nurses kept trying to give him what you give heart attack patients, which would have killed him. Fortunately he's a former doctor and knew.

@Ignatius55_ Bentley was a seriously nasty piece of work and would undoubtedly have gone on to reoffend had his sentence been commuted; but there are good reasons to be uneasy about it. It's also unclear whether he really didn't know Chris brought a gun (if not, it's not joint enterprise).

@Ignatius55_ Bentley said "Let him have it" after a copper demanded Chris give him the gun; hence ambiguity. Chris, the actual shooter, wasn't hanged - he was underage - hence perceived unfairness of Bentley (handcuffed at time of shooting) being sentenced to death.

@kittenpov39 @Catholic_Briton @CallumLyon They can't charge you more for prepayment any more, though I realise you can't get a fixed-rate tariff; but my figures are from last year when I had a variable standard tariff, which ought to be the same as what you're on. I'd ask your landlord, because you may be overcharged.

@kittenpov39 @Catholic_Briton @CallumLyon I'm surprised by that utility bill. I have a one-bed work flat which is leccy-only (so very expensive to heat) and my utility bill is £50 in the summer months and up to £100 in the winter. What appliances do you find are using all the power?
