🙌 Latvia welcomes the unanimous adoption of the 🇺🇳 #UNSC resolution renewing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) sanctions regime and the mandate of its Group of Experts for another year.
❗️The conflict in eastern DRC continues to rage, and a fit-for-purpose sanctions regime is essential to curb support for armed groups and ensure that those responsible for causing suffering to civilians and obstructing peace efforts are held accountable.
🇱🇻 Latvia also welcomes that the resolution recognizes the importance of accountability for the 2017 killings of two members of the Group of Experts, Zaida Catalán and Michael Sharp.
At the #UNSC briefing on Sudan 🇸🇩, Latvia expressed strong support for the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy’s efforts for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto @Haavisto, and underlined:
🛑 El Obeid must not become another El Fasher. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) assault must stop.
🛑 The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF must cease hostilities immediately and fully comply with international humanitarian law.
🛑 Arms flows, financing and other external support fuelling the war must stop.
🇱🇻 Latvia supports the Quintet’s efforts to advance an inclusive, Sudanese-owned and civilian-led political process.

Today, #UNSC renewed South Sudan’s sanctions regime for one year.
🇱🇻 Latvia voted YES. WHY?
❗️The security situation is increasingly worrying, and the latest benchmark assessment confirms that conditions for easing the sanctions regime have not yet been met.
❗️Targeted sanctions remain essential to curb illicit arms flows and strengthen accountability.
Latvia calls on South Sudan’s leaders to de-escalate tensions, implement the Revitalized Agreement, and deliver tangible progress on agreed commitments.
Happy #AfricaDay2026! This day is a testimony to African resilience, unity and shared purpose. We wholeheartedly wish Africa continued success and prosperity in the years ahead. By working hand in hand, we can achieve sustainable growth, strengthen stability and contribute to a more effective multilateral order.
🌍 On #AfricaDay, we celebrate Africa’s extraordinary diversity, creativity, and global influence, and send our warmest wishes to African countries, especially our A3 partners on the 🇺🇳 @UN Security Council: the Democratic Republic of the Congo 🇨🇩, Liberia 🇱🇷, and Somalia 🇸🇴. We value the close cooperation we share every day.
🗺️ Our wish today is simple: may each of us discover more of what Africa offers the world. Try jollof rice or injera, listen to Afrobeats, stand before Victoria Falls, or pick up William Kamkwamba’s acclaimed The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind.
🫶 Africa’s story is vast, powerful, and inspiring, today and every day.

At the #UNSC briefing on Abyei / #UNISFA, 🇱🇻 Latvia emphasized:
❗️With tensions in Abyei, the war in 🇸🇩 Sudan, and growing instability in 🇸🇸 South Sudan, the @UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (@UNISFA_1) remains critical to stability.
❗️The challenges are real: Sudan and South Sudan must honour their commitments and genuinely engage through the agreed frameworks.
🕹️ Peacekeeping, including #UNISFA, must adapt. Technology is no silver bullet, but it can strengthen monitoring, early warning, and personnel safety.
❗️Abyei needs political will, a capable #UNISFA, and tools fit for today’s risks.

Today, the mandate of the @UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) was renewed.
🇱🇻 Latvia voted “YES.” Protecting civilians and supporting peace, security, and stability are indispensable.
The Revitalized Peace Agreement remains the only agreed framework guiding South Sudan’s transition.
❗️We call on all parties to fully implement their obligations under the Agreement, including advancing credible elections 🗳️, strengthening state institutions 🌐, and fulfilling their responsibilities to the people of South Sudan 🇸🇸.
Ahead of the @UN Mission in South Sudan #UNMISS mandate renewal, Latvia’s message is clear:
❤ People of South Sudan must remain at the centre. A strong UNMISS mandate remains indispensable.
❗️All parties must genuinely recommit to the Peace Agreement, cease violence, and prevent further deterioration. International humanitarian law must be upheld, and perpetrators held accountable.
🌊 With 70% of the country affected by flooding, and

Latvia at the #UNSC meeting on #SouthSudan: De-escalate. Protect civilians. Keep the peace process on track.
This requires:
🔹 Return to full implementation of the Revitalised peace agreement
🔹 Protect civilians and vital lifelines: end attacks on humanitarians and health care; ensure safe, rapid, unimpeded access
🔹 The region must lead - its voice and engagement are crucial to prevent further escalation

Latvia at the #UNSC on ICC (Sudan):
The parallels between crimes committed in Darfur 20 years ago and the current atrocities are reminder that where impunity persists, violence returns.
Accountability is the only way to break this cycle and protect the civilians.
