The Germans were on the offensive and the Russians on the defensive.
Both sides realised it was pointless, so the 'battle' was called off

Morale was low on the western front
Whilst there were some good units fighting there, the majority were foreign volunteers and German soldiers who were unfit for service on the Eastern Front
That is why many pow in the photos are often seen wearing the wounded badge

Until the 2+4 agreement was signed in 1990, all the lost areas were just occupied by foreign countries and were still part of germany by international law
