In the coming days there's gonna be a lot of opining about what the Harris campaign did wrong, but this election was not an indictment of Kamala Harris. It was an indictment of America.
This is precisely correct: the internet is now more real than real life. We see it around the world: politicians who are essentially memes (Trump, Modi, Milei) are able to produce big grassroots support, because their personas are highly visible online. https://t.co/H20GBc2Jb7
We must not delude ourselves in this moment. Multiracial democracy in the United States is less than 60 years old. It has always been contested, often violently so. It has always been fragile. Since this nation's inception large swaths of white Americans -- including white women -- have claimed a belief in democracy while actually enforcing a white ethnocracy. In the face of shifting demographics where white Americans will lose their numeric majority, we see a growing embrace of autocracy to keep the "legitimate" rulers of this country in power. History teaches us that we are in a perilous moment.
Democracy is clarity. As a student of human behavior, I believe it reflects the will of the people. The race is not over but the blame game has begun. I will not let the pundits scapegoat Black voters. I will not let you scapegoat Arab American voters. Not even the shift of Latino voters. Donald Trump was supported by White men, White women, non college educated and college educated. Suburban White women and rural White women by a majority. It’s clear that my neighbors, coworkers, and friends have no problem with a convicted felon, convicted rapist, racist, and misogynist leading their government. They share his values. People show you who they are.
What’s coming is chaos, confusion, and attacks on every issue you care about all at once. That’s the strategy — mass mayhem and distraction. Don’t let it work. Define your sphere of influence: where you can have an impact, work on that, strengthen/build relationships.
It’s insane to me that we now live in a world where Democratic polling locations are being targeted with fake bomb threats in order to suppress turnout.
Y’all, it’s 8:30 ET. It’s ridiculously early. Take a breath, don’t overanalyze every little data point, and have patience. Don’t waste emotional energy on data that doesn’t deserve it.
The biggest story of the night is Russia calling multiple bomb threats into Democratic strongholds across the country. This should shock every American to the core.
