This paragraph from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons policy statement on gender surgery for minors is so important to understand.

Anyone who has worked at a patients bedside understands that before a medical intervention is initiated, there is a discussion of its risks vs benefits.

These discussions happen even for small interventions such as inserting a Foley catheter (to monitor urine output).

The level of risk a medical team will tolerate depends on the benefits of the intervention and the clinical presentation of the patient.

For example, a cardiac bypass surgery has high risks. These risks are tolerated because patients needing bypass surgery are likely to die from a heart attack due to blocked arteries.

The potential benefits outweigh the potential harms of the procedure.

It would be unethical to accept the same risk profile of cardiac bypass surgery for an elective, cosmetic procedure (with far less, if any, physiological benefits).

And yet that’s what has occurred in medicine for the past 10+ years.

Children have been given cosmetic surgeries with high risk profiles that destroy functioning body parts and have no clear medical benefits.

The only supposed “benefits” of sex-rejection surgeries were unproven, alleged psychological benefits based on bad science.

Children took on the huge risks of having their bodies irreversibly maimed for the unproven “benefit” of possibly having a temporary psychological improvement.

This was always deeply unethical medicine.

It’s fantastic to see a medical society acknowledge this.

But damn—it took way too long.

And there are thousands of children lying in the wake of this destruction that will never get their healthy bodies back.
