Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man

John 6:53: “Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.’”

This is in the middle of Jesus’ “Bread of Life” discourse, right after the feeding of the 5,000. Jesus contrasts the temporary manna in the wilderness with Himself as the true Bread from heaven that gives eternal life.

Eating His flesh and drinking His blood = receiving Christ by faith, trusting in His sacrificial death (body given, blood shed on the cross). It is not a literal call to cannibalism, nor a requirement for participating in the Lord’s Supper/Eucharist as a salvific act.

Jesus explains the metaphor throughout the chapter with clear equivalences to believing:

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)

“For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life…” (John 6:40)

“Very truly I tell you, the one who believes has eternal life.” (John 6:47)

The language of “eating” and “drinking” is vivid Jewish imagery for internalizing and appropriating something - making Christ’s atoning work your own through faith. This is why many in the crowd were offended and left; they wanted physical bread or a works-based system, not radical faith-dependence on Jesus.

Salvation = CHRIST DIED FOR YOU
This is the heart of it. “Eating His flesh and drinking His blood” points to trusting in Christ’s death (body broken for us, blood poured out for the forgiveness of sins). It is the moment we receive the benefits of His finished work.

Salvation = MOMENT of time
Yes. The one who believes/eats/drinks “has eternal life” (present tense, John 6:47, 54) and “will live forever” (John 6:51, 58). It is instantaneous reception of life, not a process.

Salvation = BELIEVE in CHRIST
Explicitly. The entire discourse equates feeding on Christ with believing in Him. Peter’s confession at the end confirms this: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” (John 6:68-69)

Service (dying to self, following, long obedience) comes after this. Once you have “life in you” by faith (John 6:53), you then live it out in daily discipleship.

You don’t “eat and drink” Christ repeatedly to stay saved or earn more favor - He is received once for all by faith, and His life now works in and through the believer (John 6:56-57).

Salvation is a moment of receiving Christ (believe / eat / trust in His death).

Service is the lifelong response of living for the One who gave you life.

Christ died for you → receive Him by faith in a moment → then die to self and follow in service. Jesus is calling people to Himself, not to a religious performance.

It’s all about faith.
