🎥 Wow, absolutely atrocious ending to the mixed doubles semifinal at the French Open. 😮
At 19-18 in the decider, Gicquel-Delrue & Feng-Huang have just played the longest rally of the match! And as the players get their breath back to restart play, the umpire decides to issue a red card and deduct a point for the French pair for overshooting the 25 seconds between the points... (I counted, they were about five seconds late.) Match point to China and they win.
Badminton's shot clock – only occasionally used this year – already feels like a useless addition to a sport that is anyway played at a breathtaking speed. Sure, there are some unnecessary delays and gamesmanship but the umpires can be given the discretion to deal with such situations. But that's for another day.
This an example of how it should NOT be used.
Sure, there had to be warnings and a yellow card before this, but this is nonsensical umpiring, not to follow common sense and let play continue. By issuing a red card for a few seconds' delay, the umpire actually ended up delaying the match even further and completely, unnecessarily ruining the finish.
Read the bloody room. No one would have complained – not even the Chinese – at that point and Delrue was anyway ready to get the play going quickly.
So poor. And it would be rubbish to say the umpire was just following the rules here.
Sindhu initially drawn vs ASY in R32 but after Tomoka WDN, she was promoted as seeded by Seed Withdrawal Movement (SWM)
Sindhu will now meet ASY in the FrenchOpen Final. Destiny.
