Privacy, Open Source, Free Speech, Democracy in Everything, Anti-Tech-Lords, Anti-Materialism, Anti-Dictatorship of any kind, PLS Stop AI destroying humanity
Our highest and most urgent national priority should be AI safeguards. The risks of AI weapons, pathogens, mass unemployment, surveillance, and even extinction must not continue to be largely ignored.
Uncontrolled AI poses a severe danger to all of humanity.
On Wednesday, I'll be hosting a discussion with leading AI scientists from the US and China about the need for international cooperation against this existential threat. This is an enormously important issue. Join us.
I enjoyed my chat with Hank Green.
Three years ago, AI leaders, including Elon Musk, warned we were moving too fast and even called for a pause.
Nobody listened.
@AOC and I are saying the same thing: slow it down and make sure AI works for people — not just billionaires.
The number of people who are okay with posthumanity replacing humanity in the near future is surprisingly high. I interact with folks on an almost daily basis who defend statements by Beff Jezos, Eliezer Yudkowsky, Larry Page, and others. Very depressing. Team Human is losing.
74% of Americans now say the government isn’t doing enough to regulate AI.
They’re right.
That’s why I introduced a moratorium bill - to give us time to address the risks and to ensure that this technology works for all of us, not just the billionaires who own it.
BERNIE SANDERS: "In a sane world, the leadership of the United States sits down with the leadership in China... to work together so that we don't go over the edge and create a technology which could perhaps destroy humanity."
Amazing to see Bernie get AI-pilled and just instantly start talking about it like a reasonable person. No fucking around, he understands the stakes and is trying to do something about it.
Seriously, what a hero.
We've come a long way since February 2023.
Every single one of you who's signed a petition, attended a protest, wrote a book, or founded an activist group has got us to this point.
There's still a lot of work to do to get a global treaty.
But I think I can smell the ink.
"What the hell happened?"
Outside of xAI, MILA professor @DavidSKrueger calls out @elonmusk and many AI safety researchers:
You said policy against superintelligence development was essential to prevent human extinction, but now you won't even advocate for it. Why?
I organized the biggest AI Safety protest in US History!
Nearly 200 people marched from Anthropic to OpenAI to xAI with one demand: commit to pausing if the others do too
The situation we're in with AI is infuriating and deeply tragic.
I think most people who have been thinking about this for a long time have struggled a lot with the emotional side, but often go numb over time.
It's difficult to stay connected to the emotional reality that AI companies are knowingly risking all of our lives when so many people around are so callous and there is so much gaslighting and denialism.
To clarify, the Center for AI Safety has not taken funding from Coefficient Giving / Open Philanthropy for years.
We believe the effective altruism movement is, unfortunately, controlled opposition. The less influence it has on AI safety, the better.
@DavidSKrueger This will be the largest US protest about pausing AI (100+ signups),
Speakers including David Krueger, Nate Soares, Will Fithian, Holly Elmore & reps of many orgs (humans first, quitgpt, etc)
Sign up for the protest below! (March 21st, 12-4pm)

A week from today, we will be at Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI, demanding that leaders agree to a conditional AI pause.
These companies are recklessly endangering all of our lives. Their excuse is that they can't pause unilaterally. So they must commit to pausing if others do.
if we can't get our shit together i'm gonna have to stop "well actually"ing my friends who blame capitalism for ruining the world. the critique would actually fit for once. do you have any idea how embarassing this is for me. please. i'm begging you
