i’ll be honest during the siren scene there was a moment where i thought the seals were the sirens and was ready to give the movie 5 stars because i was really taken by the concept and then i saw the actual accurate sirens

critical support to emily wilson’s thoughts abt the odyssey. homer does in fact manage to blend hero culture and negativity around war, so it IS a shame that nolan flattens it into just shame about war

@wetherspoonsgf tbf i do think nolan creates a functional and effective hero culture, but the dweeb in me wishes the film could’ve done something with odysseus realising that being a great warrior is good/fine/whatever but he also needs to relearn that there’s a time and a place for it

@wetherspoonsgf kinda sorta? i feel nolan creates a different impression of hero culture. when damon fights it’s framed as a necessary evil (suitors/trade routes) that can then be regretted. homer moves from “War(rior)s Are Sick/needed” to “but also incompatible with regular societal cohesion”
