In 2017, I gave a police complaint against a bunch of Vijay fans, for abuses and threats online. Ramkumar (who features in my latest video https://t.co/fmcWKcW85G) applied for anticipatory bail. Back then the police used to hardly identify Twitter accounts.

His mother and his employer reached out to me, told me he was a young man who is a ‘veriyan’ or hardcore fan of actor Vijay and to forgive him for his folly.

Then Ramkumar spoke to me, he was very apologetic. He told me that he did not even know my name till that day. My tweet criticising a Vijay movie was put in their group and a plan was made to abuse me. He also was a part of the plan.

Anyways, I was confused. I understood 25-yr-old Ramkumar’s issue. But should I take the complaint back? Does it bode well for me? Am I destroying his future? Am I being too soft? This was the first time I had filed a police complaint) and trust me, it isn’t an easy decision.

To cut a long story short, he apologised, I followed procedure and took complaint back.

Ramkumar kept in touch over the years, he was respectful and he kept telling me he refrains from being abusive. Through him and a few others, I tried to understand how internet mobs behave.

Over the years, I have figured that most times these armies don’t even know who they are harassing. They are like robots, ready with abuses. That their target is a real human with real feelings and how mass harassment can impact others doesn't even occur to them. Many times, abusive movie fans are just kids in schools and colleges.

I believe in reformation and if my complaint helped a Ramkumar, then it’s good enough for me. TVK has four spokespersons. I reached out to Ramkumar for the intv for this very reason, because every story has to be told sometime. Should he have been made a spokesperson? That's not my call. But he makes interesting points as a fan and how he percieves Vijay in politics.

And this is what he told me, “I should thank you for the police complaint. Because of me others are aware what to do and what not to. They can point at me as an example. I should thank you for that. At the same time, you learn things like how to criticise others, how to speak as you mature with age.”
