Again, FG Disburses ₦250,000 Each To Small Businesses At 7th MSMEs Clinic In Ondo

** Enabling environment for MSMEs central to President Tinubu's economic policy, says VP Shettima

The federal government @NigeriaGov, on Tuesday, disbursed ₦250,000 unconditional grants each to outstanding business owners in Ondo State as part of ongoing efforts to empower Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across the country.

To this effect, Vice President Kashim Shettima @officialSKSM, who announced the disbursement of the grants, said creating an enabling environment for MSMEs in Nigeria is central to the economic policy of the Renewed Hope administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT.

Speaking during the launch of the 7th Expanded National MSME Clinics in Akure, the Ondo State capital, Senator Shettima described the ₦250,000 grant as a gift from Nigerians, through their government, to the champions of local industry.

"I am also pleased to announce today, in line with President Tinubu’s unwavering support for grassroots enterprises, that every outstanding exhibiting MSME identified during this clinic will receive an unconditional grant of ₦250,000.

"This is not a loan. It is a gift from the Nigerian people, through their government, to the champions of local industry. It is our way of saying: we see you, we value you, and we believe in your journey," he declared.

The Vice President noted that because MSMEs account for over 90 per cent of businesses in Nigeria, contributing over 45 per cent to the national economy and employing more than 60 million Nigerians, they are not only economic actors but also "the silent architects of survival, the lifelines of households, the pulse of every community".

Explaining why MSMEs are central to the economic policy of the Tinubu administration, VP Shettima maintained that while they are the true engine of poverty alleviation, no sustainable effort to reduce poverty could be achieved without the jobs and opportunities they create.

Nigeria's national prosperity, according to the VP, is entwined in the success of MSMEs, and the nation cannot grow its economy without empowering them.

He continued: "This is why the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu places the creation of an enabling environment for MSMEs at the heart of our economic policy. It is not rhetoric. It is a call to action. It is a covenant with the builders of our future.

"This administration is deliberate in walking the talk, and one of the ways we do so is through platforms such as the MSME Clinics, conceived to draw the Federal Government closer to the creators of jobs, the innovators, the dreamers who make things happen in our communities."

Underscoring the essence of launching the Expanded MSMEs Clinic in Ondo State, the Vice President said they offer small businesses in the state an unprecedented opportunity "to engage directly with regulatory agencies, financial institutions, and business support organisations."

Senator Shettima also outlined other interventions under the President Tinubu administration to include the creation of a ₦75 billion MSME Intervention Fund being administered by the Bank of Industry (BoI), ₦50 billion Presidential Conditional Grant Scheme to support one million nano businesses across the 774 local government areas of Nigeria with grants of ₦50,000 each, and ₦75 billion Manufacturers Fund for manufacturers to access up to ₦1 billion in funding at a 9 percent interest rate.

He said the idea is to ensure the challenges of small business owners "find answers, not in theories or wishful thinking, but in real-time, face-to-face, problem-solving conversations."

The VP assured that MSMEs remain the centre of economic vision of the Tinubu administration, urging small business owners "to take full advantage of the opportunities before them by engaging with the agencies present, seeking guidance, asking questions, and seizing every chance to elevate their businesses.

He thanked the government of Ondo State for its partnership on investments in infrastructure, commending the state's commitment to policies that welcome innovation and enterprise, as well as its support for local industry, which align perfectly with the federal government’s "broader agenda for a prosperous, inclusive economy."

Earlier, the Governor of Ondo State, Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa @LuckyAiyedatiwa, said the state government is also in alignment with the initiative of the federal government to drive MSME development and is implementing schemes that have enabled small businesses to address challenges inhibiting their growth.

He pointed out that his administration's 7-point agenda, which prioritises MSME growth and development, has been impactful and has resulted in successes across different sectors of agriculture, manufacturing, and fashion, among others.

Acknowledging the determination of President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima to support growth in the sector, Governor Aiyedatiwa said, "Your presence here today demonstrates your unwavering commitment to the development of our state and key sectors of our nation's economy.

"Your interest in promoting MSMEs across Nigeria has changed the fortunes and stories of small businesses across our country, and we remain grateful."

In a goodwill message, Governor Biodun Oyebanji @biodunaoyebanji of Ekiti State appreciated the federal government, particularly the Vice President, for personally driving the initiative of the Clinics.

He acknowledged that the Ekiti edition of the clinics had been impactful and remains invaluable, as businesses have continued to benefit from the network created through the programme.

Governor Oyebanji said the programme is the first attempt by any government in Nigeria to align growth to development through a deliberate and direct interface between facilitators and small business operators across the country.

In his welcome address, the Special Adviser to the President on Job Creation and MSME, Mr Temitola Adekunle-Johnson @tjadekunle_, said the Clinics have so far been very impactful, given the testimonials from operators in the sector.

He noted that the edition in Ondo State will not be different, as MSMEs were already interacting with regulatory agencies and partners to resolve issues affecting the growth of their businesses.

On his part, the Ooni of Ife, His Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, acknowledged the contributions of the Vice President and Ondo state Governor to the growth of the MSME sector in the state, urging all stakeholders to support and promote made-in-Nigeria products as part of the broad plan to support budding entrepreneurs across the country.

On his part, the Director General of Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (@SMEDANGov), Mr Charles Odii, said that through the Clinics, the Tinubu administration’s agenda for small businesses is being actualised as evidenced in the feedback received from participants at the Ondo clinics.

The high point of the occasion was the tour of the products exhibition by small business operators in Ondo and beyond by the Vice President, accompanied by the governors of Ondo and Ekiti, among other dignitaries.

Earlier, while addressing the traditional council at their chamber, Vice President Shettima thanked the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adedeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ojaja II, describing him as a bridge builder who is endeared by the Tinubu Administration.

He told the traditional council that President Tinubu, “being a son of the South West, is a man of courage who means well for traditional institutions.”

VP Shettima noted that President Tinubu is aware of the condition of the people across the country, and has summoned the courage to remove fuel subsidy, stop multiple taxation and open the Lagos-Badagry-Calabar Highway for economic activities along that corridor,” among many other policies of government to mitigate the sufferings of the people.

Earlier, the Chairman of Ondo State Council of Chiefs, His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr) Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, commended President Tinubu for removing fuel subsidy, noting that this has enabled the federal government to deploy the subsidy funds to other sectors of the economy for which Ondo State is a beneficiary.

He also commended the federal government for being focused and pledged the support of the traditional council to the success of government policies, both at the national and Ondo state levels.

At 4th AU Forum, VP Shettima Urges Integration Of Informal Economy Into Formal Intra-African Trade Framework

** Demands strong MSME ecosystem for Africa’s prosperity

** Says Nigeria is deepening investments to expand capacity of small businesses

The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima @officialSKSM, has said Africa’s future economic success depends on its ability to integrate the informal sector into the formal intra-African trade framework, particularly through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

According to him, the promise of a better future for Africa does not depend on the skyscrapers being constructed in capitals of nations or the transactions in stock exchanges but lies in the reality that the "potential of the informal sector, which accounts for nearly 90 percent" of the continent's workforce, must be harnessed.

Senator Shettima, who stated this on Monday when he declared open the 4th African Union Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Forum in Abuja @AU_ETTIM, warned that if Africa fails to harness the potential in the informal sector for small businesses to grow, the continent would "keep going round the same cycle of despair."

To achieve this, he demanded the integration of the informal economy into the fabric of formal intra-African trade, noting that this is the reason why small businesses have remained at the heart of policy formulation in Nigeria.

"Your Excellencies, distinguished delegates, there can be no African prosperity without a strong MSME ecosystem. This forum is a continental call to action. We owe it to ourselves, to our children, and to generations unborn, to integrate our informal economy into the framework of formal intra-African trade.

"I am confident that through our collaborative efforts, this forum will mark a turning point. We hope to see our shared aspirations translated into concrete actions that empower our MSMEs and propel Africa towards a brighter, more sustainable future," VP Shettima told delegates and other participants at the forum.

Welcoming the delegates and participants to the forum, the Vice President conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's message of assurance, of Nigeria’s hospitality, and the nation's readiness to join other countries on the continent in learning from one another, as well as the determination to agree on the direction taken to effectively compete with the rest of the world.

He underscored the crucial role MSMEs play in the development and growth of Africa, observing that beyond employing millions of Africans, "they are engines of inclusive growth and effective tools for poverty alleviation.

"In Nigeria alone, MSMEs contribute a staggering 48 per cent to our national GDP and employ over 84 per cent of our workforce. They are a mirror to our future, and they explain why we are deepening our investments to expand the capacity of this sector," Senator Shettima said.

Beyond building local infrastructure for entrepreneurial expansion, the Vice President implored African countries to entrench cross-border cooperation since their destinies are bound together as a continent.

He identified some of the obstacles confronting MSMEs in Africa to include limited access to affordable finance, describing this particular challenge as a recurring nightmare, just as he noted that with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), there is still hope.

"It costs our continent not just money—it costs us momentum. But we must find hope in the promise of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This is why I am particularly excited about the theme of this forum—“Building Resilient MSMEs through Digital Innovation, Market Access & Affordable Financing for Africa.” The timing is perfect. The vision is clear," he declared.

VP Shettima acknowledged what he termed a remarkable surge in digital adoption across Africa, saying technology is achieving what politics has struggled to actualise over the years.

He noted, however, that for the momentum to be sustained, policymakers must live up to their duties by "investing in robust digital infrastructure, bridging the digital literacy gap, and establishing regulatory frameworks that do not stifle innovation," he said.

Regretting the continued dependence of MSMEs on traditional financial institutions, Shettima, however, expressed hope that change is unfolding, with fintech firms across Africa now using alternative data to assess creditworthiness and extend microloans to the previously excluded.

Earlier, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President/Chairman of the Host Country Committee, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia @ihadejia, reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to a future where MSMEs are empowered to thrive.

“The forum signifies our shared commitment to a prosperous and inclusive future for Africa, a future where MSMEs have the opportunity not just to survive but to thrive. We gather here today under the theme of the Africa we want.

“It is our continental imperative and road map for unlocking the immense potential of our continent’s most vital engine—our MSMEs. An investment in our MSMEs is a direct investment in a prosperous, inclusive and self-reliant Africa,” he said.

In setting the tone for discussions at the forum, the Special Adviser to the President on Job Creation and MSME, Mr Temitola Adekunle-Johnson @tjadekunle_, highlighted the significance of the forum, particularly in addressing challenges faced by budding entrepreneurs across the continent.

He underscored the need for stakeholders across the continent to collaborate and capitalise on the potential of Africa's youthful and energetic population to transform the region's economic landscape.

In his remarks, Director General of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (@SMEDANGov), Mr Charles Odii, applauded the support and commitment of Vice President Shettima and Chairman of the National Council for MSME to the transformation and growth of the MSME sector in Nigeria, highlighting key initiatives supervised by his office since the inception of the current administration.

He emphasised the need for Nigerians to always patronise home-grown products as part of the concerted efforts to support local manufacturers and MSMEs.

On his part, the Managing Director of the Bank of Industry @BOINigeria, Dr. Olasupo Olusi, said interventions and targeted engagements through the bank have, over the years, helped in knowledge growth and adoption of digital tools by MSMEs, noting that the initiatives have impacted growth in the sector.

Also speaking, the Head of Cooperation at the Delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS @EUinNigeria, Mr. Massimo De Luca @civetdebiche, stated that access to finance remains a pressing challenge for businesses in the region, especially MSMEs.

He disclosed that the European Union has committed about €1.1 billion in support of the African Union’s implementation of AfCFTA.

“Our EU initiative in support of the African Union in the implementation of the AfCFTA hovers around 1.1 billion euros. The African Continental Free Trade Area represents an unprecedented achievement towards realising Africa’s full economic potential and integration. The EU remains firmly committed to our partnership with Africa and ECOWAS for inclusive and sustainable industrial development across the continent," he said.

Also, United Nations Development Programme (@UNDPNigeria) Resident Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Elsie Attafuah @ElsieAttafuah, emphasised the need for enabling ecosystems to help MSMEs move from resilience to scalable impact.

She said, “Across our continent, MSMEs are the builders of local prosperity. They employ, they innovate, and they adapt, but they cannot thrive on resilience alone. They need ecosystems that work for them, platforms to commercialise innovation, access to working capital and markets both domestic and continental that recognise their value.”

On his part, Permanent Representative of the African Union Sixth Region Global (@AU6RG) to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Afolabi Oke, announced the appointment of Mr. Temitola Adekunle-Johnson, Special Adviser to the Nigerian President on Job Creation and MSMEs, as the Special Adviser to the AU 6th Region on Job Creation and MSME Development.

“The African Union Sixth Region Global is dedicated to representing and advocating for the African diaspora worldwide. As an extension of the African Union, we serve as the ‘Sixth Region,’ uniting people of African descent living outside the African continent and Friends of Africa,” Oke said.

On Nigeria’s export and industrialisation, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (@NeximBank), Mr. Abubakar Abba Bello, reiterated the bank’s commitment to MSME financing as a strategic pathway to value chain development and AfCFTA success.

“There’s a need for Africa to look inward to develop its value chain. We need to facilitate the success of the AfCFTA, and this is dependent on boosting production," he said.

Quality Education For The Nigerian Child Remains President Tinubu's Top Priority - VP Shettima

The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima @officialSKSM, has reiterated the commitment of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT to investment in quality education for all Nigerian children, saying it is a top priority for the administration.

Accordingly, he called for more private sector partnership in investing in the nation's education system and intellectual capital, which, according to him, is very crucial to the success of providing quality education for the Nigerian child.

The Vice President stated this on Wednesday during the presentation of digital learning devices to students of Government Science Secondary School, Pyakasa, Abuja, by @MTNNG Nigeria Communications PLC.

He declared: "I want you all to remain assured that investing in quality education for every single Nigerian child remains a top priority for the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration. We recognise that the partnership of the private sector is crucial to the success of this important mission.

"This is why we deeply appreciate MTN for rising to the occasion through this donation to our students. He disclosed that the initiative to be replicated in schools across the country would significantly impact science education and digital literacy in Nigeria, even as he assured that there is more to be benefited from the partnership between government and MTN, which would be unveiled in the nearest future.

Also speaking, the Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Mukhtar Shagaya @MuktarShagaya, said the initiative is a testament to the power of partnership between the public and private sectors in advancing the cause of education in Nigeria and beyond.

He said the numerous challenges in the education sector can be addressed by improved synergy among stakeholders, just as he pledged the support of the National Assembly in putting in place the necessary legislation that will significantly impact the sector.

FG Moves To Fast Track MSMEs Growth, Sets Up C'ttee To Enhance Financing

** We'll be more deliberate in supporting small business owners to grow - VP Shettima

The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima @officialSKSM, has said that the federal government, working in collaboration with other stakeholders, will be more deliberate in ensuring growth in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) space in Nigeria.

To this end, the National Council on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) has set up a committee to interface with the Central Bank of Nigeria to enhance the financing of small businesses in the country.

This was part of decisions taken on Tuesday at the first meeting of the National Council on MSMEs for 2025 held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Speaking after deliberations by members, Vice President Shettima said the federal government, through its agencies and partners, has the moral burden of supporting growth in the MSME space and facilitating job creation across different sectors for Nigerians.

Reeling out the mandate of the committee, the Vice President said the efforts of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT in supporting small businesses, evident in important policies and programmes, need to be complemented by stakeholders, especially the private sector.

The committee headed by the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Sen. John Enoh @OwanEnoh, has Ministers of Science and Technology; Women Affairs; Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on MSMEs as members.

Others include the CEOs of Bank of Industry, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (@SMEDANGov), Bank of Agriculture (@BOINigeria), Nigeria Export-Import Bank (NEXIM Bank), Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN), Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (@nipcng), Nigerian Export Promotion Council (@OfficialNEPC), and the representative of NACCIMA and the organized private sector.

In the same vein, Council also approved a loan scheme for MSMEs known as the syndicated de-risked loans for small businesses.

The scheme will be a partnership between state governments and financial institutions aimed at enhancing access to finance for MSMEs at single-digit rates across the country.

Vice President Shettima advised state governments to set up vehicles that are devoid of political interests to drive the implementation of the syndicated de-risked loans for the MSMEs scheme.

“Some of these initiatives are laudable and will need to outlive the present administrations in the States. Regardless of political affiliations, Nigerians must be seen to be the ultimate beneficiaries of these schemes that we are trying to put in place,” the VP stated.

Earlier, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on MSMEs, Mr Temitola Adekunle-Johnson @tjadekunle_, presented the ‘syndicated de-risked loans’ scheme for small businesses, seeking the cooperation of members and describing it as a game-changing programme to provide affordable and available loans for businesses.

He said the initiative is in acknowledgement of the President’s passion and commitment to the development of small businesses and aimed at providing more jobs for Nigerians.

In his presentation on the state of MSMEs in Nigeria, the DG SMEDAN, Mr Charles Odii @TheCharlesOdii, said the agency was proposing an initiative which was born from a 3-day MSME conference held in 2024.

He said the initiative known as the GROW Nigeria strategy is to provide guidance, resources, opportunities, and the workforce to support the about 40 million small businesses across 8 distinct sectors.

John Enoh; Ministers of Science and Technology, Mr Uche Nnaji; Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Aliyu Abdullahi; representative of the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria.
