In September 2024, the then United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken accused African Stream of being 'secretly funded' by Russia and featuring 'Kremlin propagandists', without a shred of evidence. Over the next few weeks, tech companies did not give their reasons as they suspended or banned our official accounts. More than 2.3 million people followed African Stream's accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, TikTok, and YouTube. We also lost access to our Google services, including Gmail. The censorship campaign forced us to rely on the personal social media accounts of Editor-in-Chief Ahmed Kaballo.

With this new round of censorship, Instagram at least provided a reason for the restrictions, albeit not based on any evidence. We have never used bots or paid services for reach, likes or followers.
