Maybe it’s X algorithms — but my TL is full of criticism of the United Stands for being “negative” — I don’t get it?

🔺 I get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, nothing is, and especially not a edgy fan channel. At some point or another it surely upset quite a lot of people over the years.

🔺But — how — can someone being critical of Manchester United’s OWNER be seen as such a big problem? In hindsight — has there ONCE, after a summer transfer window, ever been reason to not be extremely critical of United’s owners since at least 2013?

🔺It is not ”thankful” to be negative during a summer transfer window. Look at mainstream media — this is why they NEVER are critical of people like Wilcox during a transfer window, it doesn’t generate clicks. They are critical of everything else, which formation the manager uses etc but I’ve never seen anyone at the Athletic or a major newspaper call out someone like Wilcox for not signing a left back.

If anything, people who care about United should be really thankful for The United Stands and Goldbridge — spending a full summer chasing United’s owner with a blow torch, holding their feet to the fire.

🔺I fairly regularly listen to TUS and also the Stratford Paddock. My son watched TUS all the time.

As a 44 y/o, who at various degrees over the years have followed United closely since the early 90s, and often been really concerned about a club I hold extremely dear — I think the fan channels are GREAT custodians of the coverage of the club. I really do.

🔺If I, as a concerned somewhat senior fan, evaluate the media landscape around MUFC — I am for example a heck of a lot more concerned about The Athletic, Sky and main stream media.

I love listening to Carl Anka, I used to subscribe to Andy Mitten’s fanzine in the 90s, Laurie Withwell is quality. The work they do is of fantastic quality. But would they EVER cover a subject that don’t score you brownie points with the club and the industry? Be really critical of the owners? Never.

🔺But is there really reason to scrutinize the owners of Manchester United? Isn’t everything fine now?

From around 2010 to late September 2022 I gradually followed United less and less. Got my first work after law school, had 3 kids, and I just had lost faith in the Glazers. But then I was all of a sudden spending 24 hours every other day with my son, who is a United fan, in a hospital. He was very fascinated with social media, YT especially but we started this account just for the fun of it.

Around United’s transfer business — there was so much talk about FFP. United put it out there — ”we can’t spend more, see FFP”. ETH was told it and repeated it in PCs.

When I look into it — it is clear as day that it’s a BS excuse to protect the Glazers. United could not spend more because it paid the owners debt and had no cash, not due to FFP. This was just said to protect the Glazers and con the fan base.

After a while, I realize that the talk about United paying fantasy wages under the Glazers compared to all rivals just stinks. Makes no sense. Why would we? Why would a KDB accept a fraction of the pay a Sancho gets?

So I check the factual wages paid by United, Chelsea, City, Liverpool and co and at the same time UEFA publish a Financial Landscape report showing how much each club pays non-player personnel. Again, it’s clear as day that United surprise surprise never has paid ”fantasy wages”. Our player wage bill was 3rd miles behind City and Chelsea from 13/14 to 17/18 when it dropped to 4th, and now it’s down to like 6-7. Every report about United paying fantasy wages was just nonsense.

That fact that the Glazers can come in and buy England’s biggest club, provide insufficient funding for it to be successful (as in handling a generational rebuild after Fergie and ever finishing in the top 2. The fact that we often finished outside the top 5-6 was on Woodward) and get away with lies of the opposite — is not satisfying.

I think scrutiny is needed.
