Every so often a video comes along that I think every American should sit down and watch. This is one of them.

@nickshirleyy traveled to four cities, Portland, Seattle, Skid Row in Los Angeles, and Kensington in Philadelphia, to show the fentanyl crisis exactly as it is. No filters and no talking points. Just real people, on real streets, in broad daylight.

The numbers alone stopped me cold: "In 2024 alone, fentanyl was involved in over 47,000 overdose deaths." That is about 130 people every single day.

In Portland, @kevinvdahlgren walks Nick through the city he grew up in and says it plainly: "This is not the Portland I grew up in."

In Seattle, @choeshow cuts right to the heart of it: "This is not a homeless crisis we're seeing out here. This is a drug crisis, Nick."

In Los Angeles, Nutriband CEO Gareth Sheridan explains the side of this story most people never hear, including patients in real pain who lost access to care. His reminder stuck with me: "We're talking about people, not statistics, not numbers."

And the people Nick meets on the street will stay with you. A young woman in Seattle who told him, "I've lost like 21 of my friends due to fentanyl," and who had just booked her bed date for treatment. A father of eight in Kensington who has been through rehab four times and still says, "Of course. And I want that life back."

Nick even stopped to help a mom and her son living in a tent on Skid Row, got them into a hotel, and helped get the boy enrolled in school. That is what caring about people actually looks like.

As someone living with ALS, I think a lot about the value of every single day of life. Watching people lose theirs to a few dollars of poison breaks my heart. Nick is right: "This crisis must stop."
