@Straiky_@LeviBetz@zombie_mustard@rosebudlight Right but if you just hear “cold start” that doesn’t tell you whether it’s “cold as opposed to hot” or just “cold as opposed to not cold” and to a person uninformed about engines, the logical first question is “oh, is there something special I don’t know about cold starts?”
@LeviBetz@zombie_mustard@rosebudlight Not because it’s not intuitive (it is!) but just because the assignment of a modifier to “start” kind of implies you’re talking about something different from “normal” starting that throws people off the scent of something they probably could otherwise have reasoned to
@LeviBetz@zombie_mustard@rosebudlight I mean sure, I know how thermodynamics works, it’s not unintuitive to me that it would be different (indeed, many process are different if you do them at hot or cold temps!) but I just don’t think it’s that shocking or upsetting for a tiktok layperson not to know the term
@LeviBetz@zombie_mustard@rosebudlight (Fair point about multiple starts and stops within the same trip, I guess the correct formulation would’ve been something more like “nearly every vehicle in service is cold started at least once each day it’s used” which I assume is the case for anything that isn’t 24/7 service?)
@LeviBetz@zombie_mustard@rosebudlight Cold starting is the default thing! Every single engine that has started at least once has cold-started at least once (unless you heated it up using outside energy, in which case THAT source was cold-started at least once), but not every engine has hot started!
@LeviBetz@zombie_mustard@rosebudlight Like, yeah, the simplest explanation is just “it’s a start that’s cold”, but MOST times I start my car are cold starts, so my parents didn’t teach me as a toddler “this is called cold starting”, they just taught me “this is called starting”
@internetliberal@JennyENicholson Been thinking about this more at the office instead of working, and I’m sure someone’s already doing this, but you could imagine a concept artist inserting keyframes and having the model interpolate between them? Still suffers from garbage in->garbage out but interesting at least
@internetliberal@JennyENicholson So over the course of the five seconds or whatever it’s fairly internally coherent but as soon as the “camera” cuts, the sense of space of the scene goes out the window unless a person or some other bit of code steps in manually to assist (which I think they’re working on?)
