If Zuma was always this corrupt and evil as some comrades now tell us, then the obvious question is: why did the movement defend him, promote him and repeatedly elect him to positions of responsibility? Cadre Mtolo himself was a beneficiary of the political era of Wenzeni uZuma. So what exactly are we saying to voters now?

Because if the argument is that Zuma was a known thief or corrupt leader all along, then that doesn't only indict Zuma. It also raises serious questions about the ANC leadership that kept defending and empowering him. You can't knowingly harbour a corrupt leader because he is politically useful at the time, then years later present the same person to the public as the embodiment of everything wrong with the movement.

This is precisely where the ANC has damaged its own brand. We have become too comfortable with character assassination for political expediency. Someone leaves the organisation and suddenly everything about them becomes evil. A leader is decampaigned for years because of serious allegations, but once political circumstances change, we expect voters to accept that same person as an honest and credible leader. Then we wonder why people are sceptical when we arrive at their doorsteps asking for their vote.

Politics has consequences, comrades. The things we say today don't disappear when the political winds change tomorrow. If you tell voters that Zuma was corrupt throughout his time in public office, you're also forcing them to ask why the ANC gave that "corrupt" man two terms as President and defended him for so long.

That contradiction is not helping the ANC. It is hurting the ANC.

We need to stop treating every political disagreement as an opportunity to destroy another comrade's character. Political expediency may win an internal battle today, but it can leave a permanent scar on the organisation's credibility tomorrow. And voters are not stupid. They remember what we said yesterday, especially when we expect them to believe the complete opposite today.
