👍Odds of CA property tax reform (by fixing the Upland ruling) in November are now much better than before. I liked the transfer tax provision in Save Prop 13 too but it would have made passage less likely, maybe impossible. Kick the FG and put some points on the board.
@markburns4RE@SvOpportunity@marcjoffe@lancelands@MuniFinanceGuy BTW, at Tuesday’s council meeting, a couple dozen public comments from residents blindsided by major downtown parking fee hike that was quietly slipped into the recently approved budget with no advance public outreach. Council now scrambling to react to unexpected backlash.
San Jose City Council progressives vote 8-2 to place Ranked Choice Voting city charter amendment on 2028 ballot. Would give council RCV option for special elections to fill council or mayoral vacancies.
Mayor Matt Mahan walked the streets of downtown San Jose campaigning with Adam Schiff during his senatorial campaign. Mahan pitched his own wealth tax plan to tax unrealized capital gains. In California they call politicians with that ideological bent “moderate Democrats.”
Democrats are now openly pitching direct redistribution of wealth as part of "eat-the-rich" policies. Sen. Adam Schiff dangled Musk's wealth before voters: "$1 trillion, if we decided to distribute that equally among American households, your household would get $7,500..."
SJ CM Cohen co-signed the opposition to Save Prop 13 resolution. Cited lost revenue from Measure E, but had to ask staff how much revenue is generated from the tax.

San Jose CM George Casey represents D10, but on Tuesday he spoke on behalf of all taxpayers and fiscal responsibility advocates. Every SJ resident and political leader should listen to what he had to say. #SaveProp13
What an absolutely unforgettable night! We are still buzzing from the incredible energy, the stunning sunset, and the powerhouse country tunes of Trey Taylor right here at the farm. 🎸
This evening wasn't just about great music—it was a celebration of the community we are building together as I run to represent State Assembly District 28.
A massive THANK YOU to our incredible neighbors, friends, and supporters who came out, and to .@TreyTaylorMusic for putting on an absolute powerhouse of a show! 💜
Let's keep this momentum going for District 28! 🗳️

State Assembly candidate Carol Pefley sharply and accurately points out why so many taxpayer and fiscal responsibility advocates feel burned by Mayor Mahan, CM Mulcahy, and CM Foley. https://t.co/Y5IlNqTZcx
It was disappointing to hear the mayor and several CMs misleadingly characterize Save Prop 13 as “retroactively” reversing SJ Measure E property xfer tax. To be clear, Save 13 would sunset Measure E two years in the FUTURE. City could propose a future general tax ballot measure.
SJ Mayor Mahan & the council yesterday disregarded the voices of more than a dozen residents who spoke during public comments and passed a resolution 9-2 opposing the Save Prop 13 ballot initiative slated for the November. Kudos to CMs Casey & Doan for standing with taxpayers

Transfer taxes don't care if you made money or not. The initiative to preserve and reinstate the 2/3 vote requirement for special taxes (like Measure E in San Jose and ULA) will be on the ballot in November. If it is a worthwhile tax that voters believe in; these transfer taxes will go on the ballot again and get passed.
Don't hold your breath.
Measure E passed 53/47 with the promise that middle income homebuyers would get help with home affordability. That aspect went away. They promised that it was just a wealth tax that might affect 2-3% of sales. It was charged on 15% of residential sales in 2024. That's not mentioning commercial property sales - you know the ones where the owners are unlikely to be able to vote on it at all.
Now the council fights over the money between homeless shelters and $1M new units for transitional and permanent low income projects. And they will oppose the 'Preserve Prop 13' ballot measure. Call/email your city council member in San Jose and voice your opinion to stop taxing Seniors and long term residents when they want to sell and penalizing buyers who come here for jobs (they pay as well and it makes housing more unaffordable).
Remember to vote YES for the "Local Taxpayer Protection Act" in November.

California's County Taxpayer Groups Are an Endangered Species – The Free Market Movement Should Save Them.
When no organized opposition exists, tax measures frequently appear on the ballot with no argument against them at all, leaving voters with only the proponents’ side of the story.

The last few days have brought hot weather and epic lightning & thunder to the mid Atlantic region. Forecasts for tonight were ominous. And wrong. Mother Nature, President Trump and UFC gave us a celebration for the history books. 🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸
