Given Jason Arday has been exposed as the charlatan he is, but more importantly the institutions that selected and promoted him are now being exposed, I’ve been looking closer at another phenomenon: 𝐓̲𝐇̲𝐄̲ ̲𝐑̲𝐈̲𝐒̲𝐄̲ ̲𝐎̲𝐅̲ ̲𝐓̲𝐇̲𝐄̲ ̲𝐃̲𝐈̲𝐒̲𝐀̲𝐁̲𝐈̲𝐋̲𝐈̲𝐓̲𝐘̲ ̲𝐈̲𝐍̲𝐅̲𝐋̲𝐔̲𝐄̲𝐍̲𝐂̲𝐄̲𝐑̲ Two names to emerge from Covid-era TikTok, which promoted disabled young people like celebrities, were Evie Meg, aka “This Trippy Hippie”, and Zara Beth. Both built large online platforms around disability, both became wheelchair users, both described expanding lists of conditions and symptoms, both became authors, and both received recognition and opportunities through disability advocacy. 𝐄𝐕𝐈𝐄 𝐌𝐄𝐆 Evie’s public list has included Tourette syndrome, PANDAS/PANS, Functional Neurological Disorder, OCD, seizures, dystonia, catatonia, depression, severe social anxiety, school phobia, rage episodes, “personality switches”, food restriction and periods of paralysis. On her JustGiving page she described having “hundreds of symptoms”. More recently she has discussed encephalitis/brain inflammation, Bartonella and Lyme disease. Opportunities have been considerable: • Her disability content helped build an audience of 15m+ TikTok followers • Little, Brown/Sphere gave her a publishing deal for My Nonidentical Twin: What I’d Like You to Know About Living with Tourette’s • Her 2022 “Walk 4 PANDAS/PANS UK” raised money for charity, while her pages also promoted a personal fundraiser • She became a National Diversity Awards finalist for Positive Role Model – Disability • She was selected to speak in Luxembourg before the European Commission about disability in the workplace • She became a professionally represented influencer with brand opportunities, merchandise, artwork, documentaries, interviews and speaking engagements 𝐙𝐀𝐑𝐀 𝐁𝐄𝐓𝐇 Zara says she began this journey at around 15 when her tics deteriorated. She subsequently developed Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), which she says causes seizures, tremors, weakness and dystonia. She also identifies as autistic, claims she is chronically ill, is an ambulatory wheelchair user, and has daily seizures, fainting episodes and paralysis. In October 2021 she launched a GoFundMe called “Help Zara Get a Wheelchair”, saying she was unable to walk “more often than not nowadays” and needed a custom chair to regain independence. Recent footage shows her encountering inaccessible railway stairs, getting out of the wheelchair and walking up without holding the handrail when no other accessible route was available. The platform has brought opportunities: • She describes herself as a full-time content creator, author and disability advocate with a community of more than two million • In 2025 she published a 288-page memoir, Enemy For A Brain, about Tourette’s, autism, wheelchair use, chronic illness and “becoming disabled” • She sells disability/chronic-illness merchandise including awareness clothing and products • She offers paid services including advertising, public speaking, content creation and video production; her site invites companies to work with her for content, interviews, writing, speaking and events • She was shortlisted for the Scope Awards 2025 Social Media Influencer award • She has been twice nominated as Positive Role Model for Disability at the National Diversity Awards and is on the 2026 shortlist It’s almost like the message to young people who can’t be catapulted to professor status like Jason Arday because of their skin colour is: “𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬: 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐲𝐅𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫. 𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤, 𝐰𝐞’𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮, 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝-𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬.” Aren’t socialist hippies just lovely 🤪
