曾侯乙编钟,1978 年出土于湖北随州曾侯乙墓,湖北博物馆藏(1)
The Bianzhong of Marquis Yi of Zeng (曾侯乙编钟) was unearthed in 1978 from the Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng (曾侯乙墓) in Suizhou (随州), Hubei (湖北), and is now in the collection of the Hubei Provincial Museum (湖北博物馆). This vast musical instrument, composed of sixty-five bronze chime bells (编钟), rewrote the history of world music through its superb casting technique and outstanding musical performance. Under the vast starry sky overhead in the exhibition hall, only seeing it with one’s own eyes can truly convey the shock it produces in the heart.
The overall scale of the Bianzhong of Marquis Yi of Zeng (曾侯乙编钟) is extraordinarily imposing, yet its structure is exceptionally complex and exquisite. It consists of a bell frame (钟架) and bronze bells (青铜钟), arranged overall in an L-shape (曲尺形). It is supported by six sword-wearing bronze warrior-shaped columns and eight cylindrical columns, with seven painted wooden beams laid across them, forming a three-tier structure of upper, middle, and lower levels. The sixty-five bells are hung on the frame in three layers and eight groups. The bells themselves weigh about 2.5 tons; including the frame, hooks, and all other components, the total weight exceeds four tons. The bell bodies have a unique “combined-tile” shape (合瓦形). Striking the front drum section (正鼓部) and the side drum section (侧鼓部) of a bell produces two musical tones of different pitches (a third apart) that do not interfere with each other. The complete set of chime bells thus possesses 128 notes.
The inscriptional “instruction manual”: On the bells, the frame, and the hooks are engraved 3,755 characters of gold-inlaid inscriptions (错金铭文). The content is mainly music-temperament theory, labeling the pitch name of each bell. It can be regarded as an encyclopedia of pre-Qin (先秦) music theory written on bronze.
