Oh, bravo, BBC. In The Capture, the Corporation has outdone itself: the real villain isn’t the gangs reportedly raping schoolgirls, nor the mandarins quietly massaging migration stats. No, it’s the tiresome Englishman who dares file a Freedom of Information request. Because obviously the next logical step after politely asking for crime figures is child murder. One Excel query and you’re basically Dennis Nilsen with a filing cabinet.
And the crowning touch? This furious, Brexit-bothered native son is kitted out in full Bundeswehr chic—olive drab, the lot. Not a single Union Jack in sight. Why bother with British nationalist clichés when you can just slap on modern German military kit and let the historical smear do the work? Subtle as a sledgehammer.
So here we are: a licence-fee-funded broadcaster warning us, in glossy primetime drama, that asking the government for facts is basically domestic terrorism with better broadband. Keep those cheques coming, peasants. It’s vital we subsidise the effort to pathologise curiosity itself.
Defund the BBC? At this point we should just rename it the Ministry of Approved Narratives and be done with the pretence.
I have #Tourettes. I have been known to infrequently tic the n-word. Have I used a racist slur? Yes, I have. Am I a racist? No, I'm not.
I tic the word "spastic". Have I used an ableist slur? Yes. Am I ableist? No. Heck, I'm #disabled myself.
Those words are ones I know, and I might tic any word I know, because it's in my vocabulary register. I tic "chicken" a lot. I tic "fax machine" a lot too. Those are also in my vocabulary register, so they come out.
The point I'm making is intent, which is one #JamieFoxx doesn't seem to get. I know it's awful and embarrassing for both me & those around me. But I cannot help it.
People laugh at me when I meow, or make clucking noises but #JamieFoxx and his cheerleaders are mistakenly casting intent onto the mix, and it's dangerous to those of us who are afflicted with Tourettes & vocal spasms. I've been threatened. I've been punched by people who didn't understand what it is, and Foxx spreading misinformation only means more danger to those like me.
Let’s educate people about Tourette’s , watch the film I swear and you will realise John Davidson is an inspiration to many and is not a racist. Upsetting word yes but he meant no malice or ill feeling towards the 2 actors who handled it very well. First time I met John his first sentence to me was a hurtful tic. He can’t help it. Please watch the film to find out more.
John Davidson says he is “deeply mortified” that anyone thought his involuntary tics were “intentional or to carry any meaning.”
Full statement:
“I wanted to thank BAFTA and everyone involved in the awards last night for their support and understanding and inviting me to attend the broadcast. I appreciated the announcement to the auditorium in advance of the recording, warning everyone that my tics are involuntary and are not a reflection of my personal beliefs.
I was heartened by the round of applause that followed this announcement and felt welcomed and understood in an environment that would normally be impossible for me. In addition to the announcement by Alan Cumming, the BBC and BAFTA, I can only add that I am, and always have been deeply mortified if anyone considers my involuntary tics to be intentional or to carry any meaning.
I was in attendance to celebrate the film of my life, I SWEAR, which more than any film or TV documentary, explains the origins, condition, traits and manifestations of Tourette Syndrome. I have spent my life trying to support and empower the Tourette’s community and to teach empathy, kindness and understanding from others and I will continue to do so. I chose to leave the auditorium early into the ceremony as I was aware of the distress my tics were causing.”
In a country filled with division it’s nice to see the whole uk come together to defend someone with Tourette’s from the Americans
Makes me proud of this country for the first time in a while
