Briefly dropping back in here to share that I've accepted a new job as Lecturer of Cognitive Neuroscience (equivalent to assistant prof) at the University of Manchester in the UK!
More info on my blog (link next tweet). Find me on bluesky (same name) for more! :)
I resurrected my blog page to talk a bit more about why I'm excited about this move and all the interesting ways it felt like the right next step:

Hopefully this little overview is useful in navigating the literature, and also surfacing a lot of knowledge sitting in this older papers!
Comments / suggestions, etc welcome - if you want to chat about this piece come find me on Bluesky (or contact info on my website).
📜I just preprinted a little perspective piece / mini review on the history of the study of aperiodic neural activity - arguing there is more out there in literature than one might expect!
A historical overview of the study of aperiodic neural activity:

There are too many interesting papers to share here, but as well as the paper the project repository includes a chronological annotated bibliography, listing lots of interesting papers digging into aperiodic activity over the last 75 years:

Twitter informed me today is my 15 year anniversary on this site (!?), and perhaps that's about enough...
I'll leave the account up & might still share things here - but mainly I'll be in bluer skies (same handle).
Contact & info also on my website:

Overall, I hope this review is a useful summary, and helpful guide for future work!
Thoughts / suggestions / ideas (or missing papers) welcome!
As always, code is open, and the collected literature dataset is also available in the project repository:

📜🎉 I have a new preprint: a systematic review of clinical investigations of aperiodic activity!
I reviewed 143 reports from across 35 disorders, to summarize current results, evaluate current practices, and make some recommendations for future work:
https://t.co/adyypFEx7M
A key goal here was to integrate knowledge from across applications, to understand what's working, what's not, & how to further develop best practices for robust & productive research.
This led to a series of recommendations for future work (much discussed in the preprint):
Tomorrow (Wed) morning at #SfN24 the Jacobs lab has a group of posters in V15-V19 covering oscillations, traveling waves, and human single-units!
@ V15 - V16: human single-unit studies of navigation & memory that I help with presented by wonderful grad students Sandra & Claire:
I also added sections covering some recent empirical work - so if you're interested in our sleep project, the aperiodic methods project recently posted to bioRxiv, or a brand new review of aperiodic activity in clinical disorders (preprint being processed right now!), come chat!
I'm headed to Chicago for #SfN24, where I'm presenting a poster tomorrow (Saturday, Oct 5th) afternoon on recent updates to the specparam (formerly fooof) method! Poster board V6 from 1-5 pm.
Stop by if you want to chat on anything specparam / aperiodic / oscillations related!
🧠 I’m excited to share our latest preprint with @emilyps14 and undergraduate S. Oyama! We introduce a stochastic forward modeling framework to improve the interpretation of neural power spectral effects—like spectral slope—in biophysical terms. 1/ https://t.co/LfzzI8xWyJ
Back in 2022, @roxana_zeraati & I organized a Cosyne workshop on neural timescales, and after working on it for the last 2 years together, it's now a review paper!

(2nd blogpost to turn into a real review paper this year lol)
Does large-scale neural MEG activity correlate with micro-scale circuit properties? Our new work shows that aperiodic background activity indexes neural hyperexcitability in patients suffering from generalized epilepsy in @SfNJournals: https://t.co/7tzsWO1DIW (1/4)
Functional connectivity: oscillatory coupling or aperiodic activity?
This is the question we addressed in this brand-new preprint, fresh off the press today! 📜
