We Had a Chance to End the Conflict and We Chose to Burn It.
In 2005, something historic happened.
Israel withdrew completely from Gaza - not just its soldiers, but also all of its civilians, farms, and settlements. Thousands of Israeli families were uprooted from their homes by their own government. Synagogues were dismantled, greenhouses and infrastructure worth hundreds of millions of dollars were left behind - not destroyed, but handed over to give us a chance to start fresh.
For the first time in our history, we had full control over a piece of land - our own borders, our own cities, our own people, and access to the sea. The world was ready to help. Billions in aid and investment were promised.
It could have been the beginning of a Palestinian Singapore.
But instead of building schools, hospitals, and industries, we built tunnels, rockets, and militias.
Instead of creating hope, we chose hatred.
Instead of turning Gaza into proof that Palestinians can govern themselves, we turned it into proof that we cannot.
When Israel left, the world expected calm, peace, and progress.
What did we give them?
Civil war between Fatah and Hamas.
Executions in the streets.
A terror group seizing power and turning Gaza into a launching pad for endless wars.
And the world still asks: Why doesn’t Israel “just give up the West Bank” too?
Because they already saw what happened the last time they gave land for nothing in return.
The truth is painful, but it must be said:
We were given a chance to build a future and we used it to destroy our own.
We could have shown that we were ready for peace.
Instead, we showed that we were ruled by those who fear peace more than they fear death.
Every rocket fired from Gaza wasn’t just aimed at Israel - it was aimed at our own future.
And now, after all the destruction, poverty, and death, I keep asking myself:
What if, just once, we had chosen life instead of revenge?
We had the opportunity to end the conflict.
But our leaders and too many of us chose to keep it alive.
The difference between Iranians’ and Arabs’ relationship with Islam.
For the Arabs, Islam is a sanctification of their very identity. Islam did not simply arrive in Arabia; it emerged from its soil, its tribes, its deserts, its tongue.
It absorbed pre-Islamic Arab customs, sanctified its poetry, honored its tribal codes, and elevated its geography. Pre-Islamic values were reframed as Islamic virtues.
The Qur’an, with its linguistic, crystallized the Arabic language as divine. The Kaaba, once a pagan shrine, was rebranded as the house of the one true God.
Islam did not replace Arabness; it baptized it. The Arab became the default vessel of the divine message.
Islam was, and still is, Arabism in sacred form.
But in Iran, the story is altogether different.
When Islam reached Persia, it did not affirm or elevate what it found. It did not sanctify the pre-existing culture. It swept it away.
It dismantled an ancient civilization with millennia of philosophical, literary, and religious tradition.
Zoroastrianism, which had shaped Persian ethics through the triad of good thoughts, good words, and good deeds, was cast aside.
The Achaemenid and Sassanid imperial legacies, rich with administrative genius, architectural grandeur, and ethical dualism, were reduced to the derogatory label of jahiliyyah, the age of ignorance.
In other words, Islam in Iran arrived not as a fulfillment of identity, but as a foreign intruder.
Unlike in the Arab world, where Islam is seen as the culmination of their historical trajectory, in Iran, Islam is still, centuries later, viewed by many as a cultural rupture, a force that severed the Persian from his roots.
The very rise of Shiism in Iran is, in many ways, a rebellion, a theological and political protest against the Sunni Arab narrative of history.
That is why Islam in Iran, even under a theocratic regime, has never enjoyed the same cultural harmony it does in the Arab world.
The disillusionment with Islam in Iran today is not just political, it is civilizational.
The Arab world cannot imagine itself without Islam. Iran has never stopped imagining who it could have been without it.

Dear Angelina,
1. There was a ceasefire on the 6th of October. Israel didn’t start this war, Israel never does. You've somehow disregarded the fact Hamas stormed into Israel and slaughtered entire families - from babies to the elderly, and kidnapped hundreds more. Where were you then? You stayed silent.
So much for a human rights activist.
2. Why didn't you condemn the mass rape of women? the slow torture of babies in front of their parents? the young women and men that came to celebrate life and were massacred? Where was the call for a humanitarian ceasefire when we were butchered in our own homes?
So much for a human rights activist.
3. Israel abides by the rules of war by providing the entrance of humanitarian aid from Egypt and calling Palestinians to evacuate to Southern Gaza where they will be safe. Israelis never got that opportunity to evacuate. Israel never aimed at civilians, Hamas *always* aimed at civilians.
4. We are in a war with a radical Islamic ISIS-like terror organization that threatens our lives. No country would have responded differently, yet still, before air strikes on buildings, the IDF sends pamphlets and calls Palestinians to evacuate from their homes. Hamas, on the other hand, prevents them from doing so because they use them as human shields.
5. Have you ever asked yourself why Gazans aren’t allowed to use Hamas’s tunnels? Hamas openly admit that their own people's lives are not of importance to them and they won't hide them to protect them as they are keen on maximizing casualties on purpose so unknowledgeable people like you will fall for their propaganda.
So much for a human rights activist.
6. How can you ask for a humanitarian ceasefire when humans are held hostage in Gaza? Do you regard Jewish lives on purpose? How can you disregard the October 7th massacre?
So much for a human rights activist.

@paddycosgrave I can understand why you would think my statement was an overreaction. My heart is shattered right now and I dont think you can ever comprehend what we have gone through last week. Frankly, I pray that no one in the world ever experiences anything even remotely similar to what we have gone through.
But when you say "terrible killings and the level of innocent civilian casualties in Israel and Gaza" you are drawing a straight line between one of the worst atrocities in history, which was deliberately planned and executed by a terrorist organization that is explicitly saying its goal is to eliminate all Jews, and the army of a democratic country which has to respond and defend itself or face extinction. These two things can never and should never be compared.
I too like many other Israelis do not want to see civilians in Gaza get hurt, and I hope that one day there will be true peace in the middle east. But I will not give up until those who wish to eliminate me are forever gone from the Gaza strip, and unfortunately there is no magic powder that can achieve this.
It is easy to sit so far away and give moral guidance to both sides when you and your loved ones are safe, or when you dont have to look at your kids and think in the back of your mind what could happen to them if Israel is ever caught weak or offguard.
I urge you to watch this video before making these two-sided comparisons: https://t.co/wga8dzRlMP
Tonight is the 4th night our babies will spend in Gaza.
We do not know if they were harmed, injured, or even if they are still alive.
This is the time to support Israel. Do everything you can to save our children, elders, men, and women from Hamas, a terrorist ISIS-like organization.
Don't look away.
