#Karavali: A Story Rooted in Its Soil.
There are films that spend half their runtime preparing you for what's coming, and there are films that simply get on with it. Karavali belongs to the latter. Right from the opening sequence, director Gurudatta Ganiga makes it clear that this is a film interested in telling a story, not showing off.
Originally written by Chandrashekhar Bandiyappa, the film underwent changes made by Gurudatta Ganiga, though significant alterations were made, with the core of karavali being the only part that remained intact, the biggest strength of Karavali is its honesty. There are no unnecessary commercial detours, no forced comedy tracks and no scenes written just to please the front benchers. The film stays rooted to its world and trusts the audience enough to stay with it. That itself is a rarity today.
This is probably Prajwal Devaraj's best script selection in years. He is terrific in the opening portions, especially during the Yakshagana episode where his screen presence and intensity are at their best. As the story progresses, however, the character loses momentum. It isn't because Prajwal underperforms. The screenplay simply doesn't give him enough moments to elevate the character further. One thing that did bother me occasionally was the dubbing. Hearing someone else's voice for an actor we've watched for decades creates a slight disconnect.
If there is one actor who walks away with the film, it is Mithra as Mahabala. He is easily the emotional backbone of Karavali. His performance has a certain honesty that stays with you long after the film ends. Raj B. Shetty is excellent as Mahaveera. Effortless as always. Ramesh Indira does what's expected of him, although his character deserved more depth... Like in many films, this one too fails to write female characters properly. Shushmita Bhat makes a fleeting appearance, offering little to the narrative aside from standing alongside Raj B Shetty. For the other female lead, Sampada, character, there isn't much beyond the love storyline with Prajwal Devaraj. It primarily focuses on the romance aspect. Sampada barely gets enough material to leave an impression.
Technically, Karavali is rock solid. The cinematography, production design, sound design and DI deserve special mention. The world feels authentic from start to finish. Only the VFX in a few portions feels undercooked and could have been polished better.
What stood out most was how the film handled Kambala. It shows tradition with integrity, never simplifying it into a documentary or elevating it for theatrical impact. Kambala becomes a part of the story, not the story itself, and that makes the world feel far more authentic.
The film isn't without its flaws. A few supporting characters deserved better writing, and not every emotional moment lands with the impact it aims for. But these aren't problems that diminish the overall experience.
Karavali is not trying to reinvent Kannada cinema. It simply tells a sincere story with confidence, backed by strong technical work and grounded filmmaking. In a time where many films mistake noise for cinema, Karavali chooses restraint. And that works in its favour. Make sure to watch it at your nearest cinemas.
