The Future of AI Art
A short Text by our co-founder @halecar2
In the evolving scenes of contemporary art, the emergence of AI as a transformative artistic tool marks a pivotal moment, echoing the revolutionary journey of photography and video art. This journey, from the origins of photography as a medium oscillating between capturing and transcending reality, through the advent of Photoshop and its ability to construct fantastical realms, finds its latest manifestation in AI. Like its predecessors, AI is not confined to the role of a mere technological advancement; it is a digital alchemist, transforming vast data arrays into visual "problems" that broaden our aesthetic experiences and creative processes. AI art is mass-appealing because of how it combines aesthetics, narrative, technology, and artistic experimentation.
At @fellowshiptrust, we recognize and embrace this paradigm shift. AI-generated art transcends algorithmic computations to offer a portal into an aesthetic domain where human creativity intersects with machine cognition and challenges how we have created art before. This convergence is not just about the assimilation and recontextualization of trillions of imagesโa feat beyond human capabilityโbut about experimenting with new artistic territories deeply rooted in the rich histories of painting, drawing, and the two-century dominance of photography.
Lev Manovich's insights on AI and Generative Media shed light on this intersection of technology and creativity. He positions AI as a catalyst for a media revolution, on par with historical milestones such as the invention of photography or the introduction of linear perspective in Western art. AI, according to Manovich, operates on principles of prediction and synthesis, utilizing vast cultural datasets to conjure visuals that are innovative yet reflective of our artistic heritage. This aligns with the ethos of Fellowship, where AI is seen not just as a creator but as an open door to foresee visual expressions that lay in between the familiar and the new.
The allure of AI-generated art lies not in its pursuit of perfection in representation (something that has long been seen as a manifestation of artistic expression) but in its embrace of imperfection. ((See this post: https://t.co/URf3v9GigQ )) This imperfection, the ability to oscillate between precision and hallucination, gives AI art its unique appeal. It represents an 'imperfect perfection,' a paradox that aligns with what contemporary art does to challenge and redefine traditional aesthetics and representation. AI-generated images, in their unpredictability and uniqueness, capture the essence of this artistic paradox, inviting viewers into a game of how to think of the world differently.
The transformation brought about by AI in the art world is close to the journey of video art, which evolved from a fringe medium to a significant force in contemporary art. The 2019 Venice Biennale, dominated by video art, exemplifies this evolution. Video art, now encompassing traditional film, digital video, virtual reality, video games, and other new media technologies like AI, represents some of today's most compelling contemporary work. Major art institutions, including the Tate, MoMA, and the National Gallery, have recognized and integrated significant video art holdings, reflecting the medium's growing prominence and acceptance.
This journey of video art, from its initial emergence to its current status as an essential component of modern and contemporary art collections, mirrors the trajectory AI art is currently undertaking. As video art overcame technological limitations, expanded exhibition methods, and embraced institutional acceptance, AI art too is navigating similar paths, finding its place in the art world. AI art distributed via NFTs offers a new model of image experimentation, challenging conventional notions of artistic creation and ownership.
At Fellowship, we are not just observers but active participants in this artistic metamorphosis. We champion artists who view AI not merely as a tool but as a medium in its own right. Our goal is to nurture and showcase artists who understand this transition and who harness AI's potential to create works that are conceptually rich and aesthetically profound. In this new frontier of art, we eagerly explore and celebrate the boundless possibilities that AI and NFTs bring to the creative realm and invite collectors to participate in this story that is being built around us day by day.
We truly believe this is a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and the tools to participate in these changes are there for us to use.

We are crossing our whole lives.
Crossing is at the very crux of being human.
We cross our lives. We cross paths.
Our relationships, our careers.
And when it's done; into the great unknown.
At the end of it all.
