@NathanpmYoung I agree this compromises other aspects e.g. gender neutrality / anonymity, but having references as a secondary factor at final round stage feels important. Perhaps you can compensate for biases a little, but it does still feel useful

@NathanpmYoung It helps with CV fibs. But even in absence of CVs, you can (very rarely) find that people were gently manoeuvred out of a previous company/role due to personality/professional issues...they can fly through tests etc., then fail to reply to emails, blame their team, shout etc

@thommeread @sboots All so so true, although in-house isn't difficulty-free. Any approach needs strategic foresight, and COTS often looks like a quick fix when people panic.

Thoughts: bring clear initial reqs; consider all options inc. in-house; sponsor more modular/easy-to-bespoke products
