Progress and Recent Updates (as of March 2026)
The project has advanced significantly since its early phases (e.g., initial sections inaugurated around 2020 with support from partners like the African Development Bank, China Construction Company, and others).

• In early 2026, reports highlight eight riverside developments underway covering 48 km, with key stretches like Entoto to Peacock-Karamara (around 21–25 km), Kebena-Ginfil, and others being developed into tourist-friendly, healthy destinations.

• Private sector investment has been massive—Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed noted in January 2026 that it attracted 1.3 trillion Birr (government covers ~30%, private ~70%).

• Ongoing sections (e.g., Bambi, Bole Rwanda, Piassa, and Entoto Peacock) show major construction progress, with 4K walking tours and videos showcasing completed parks, clean rivers, modern walkways, and integrated green spaces.

• The project ties into broader corridor developments, boosting sports/conference tourism and positioning Addis Ababa as a cleaner, more attractive capital.

Hargeisa is the closest ally for Addis Ababa however it seems we not benefiting that.

The graph below should be the screensaver on every pubic and private sector decision makers’ laptop in Ethiopia, as a motivator and constant reminder where the country’s economy is headed: $6.2 Trillion and one of the 20 biggest economies in the world.

Ethiopia—the world’s 10th most populous country—is now on a remarkable economic growth trajectory. By fully leveraging its massive trainable young population, developing its still largely untapped natural resources and capitalizing on its attractive and hugely important geo-strategic location, I am of the view that the economy can be even bigger than Goldman Sach’s forecast.

Ethiopia used to be the leading poster child for everything wrong about Africa (remember “LiveAid”). But, with focus, creative imagination and a determination of “we can do it” “ማሳካት እንችላለን”(just look at the impressive new Addis Abeba), its leadership has started to turn it around despite legacy headwinds, which I am certain will be resolved and become tailwinds.

Overall, only 3 other SSA countries ranked amongst the world’s largest economies: Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana. Africa needs more.
