You rarely solve hard problems in a flash of insight. It's more typically a slow, careful process of exploring a branching tree of possibilities. You must pause, backtrack, and weigh every alternative.
You can't fully do this in your head, because your working memory is too limited. Writing is the external medium that affords the time and precision necessary.
Serious thinking must be done in writing. And that's why you can't outsource your writing, because then you're outsourcing your thinking.
One reason people don’t get AI is that they can’t fathom exponential progress.
My baby’s size is doubling every 5 weeks. Hard to believe that on their 100th birthday they’ll be larger than the observable universe.
i spent the last 2 days going through a heavily vibe coded codebase
and it's clear that it magnifies the "why not" part of your brain because the cost of adding a feature feels low
so yes the codebase was bad but what's worse is the cascading product decisions the LLM enabled
Check it out if you're interested in database internals or if you just want to know why it's a horrible idea to build a streaming data engine with a custom database from scratch🥲 https://t.co/T5aUNJ8vhz
Released a new version of Reduction (0.0.3) with lots of fixes around checkpointing. With the LSM database code loaded into my brain I wrote the first "concepts" document for the project: State (DKV)
Reduction now has a TypeScript SDK 🎉
I wrote up major changes and a benchmark comparing it to the Go SDK (link in reply).
Also I'm coming back to JS tooling after about ~5 year hiatus and getting to use Bun was great.
I felt like my first blog post on Reduction had to be something about the ethos of the project before diving into technical stuff. So I wrote about my first $10,000 programming contract, the risk of specialization, and the power of small teams.
After 8 years I decided to hang up my purple Twitch hoodie. I'm working on something I've wanted for a long time: a stream processing engine for small eng teams.
I'm looking for people who want to analyze data streams but aren't deep in the Java data ecosystem. Know anyone?
It's been ~4 years but I added a post to my blog!
It's about how I think about naming when reviewing code and designs: optimize naming for callers.

@eshear Wow loved this! For most of my life community was centered on work (or more broadly “creating”). Now I’m transitioning to children centered community and that’s also been great.
I hope that, after the remote work spike wanes, second-tier cities can get a boost in dynamism.
