I recently engaged in a conversation with black leaders about urban violence, an issue that disproportionately impacts the black community. We discussed potential solutions to this national crisis, and I shared my belief that programs alone are insufficient. In my view, the long-standing issue of urban violence will not be resolved until we confront the problem of the broken black family. This dysfunction is at the root of urban violence and contributes to other critical issues, such as poverty and hopelessness.

I drew from my experience growing up in a strong black family and raising four children. A year ago, my youngest son, who was 19 at the time, was arrested following an altercation with another young man over a girl he had dated. We did not make excuses for his behavior. My wife and I addressed the situation directly and required him to get a job to pay back all the court fees. I reminded him that he was not raised to act that way and that he would not bring shame to the Harrison family name, as my parents once told me.

Strong families are essential for helping young people navigate the challenges of culture, environment, music, and street life. They guide young people towards success and help them discover their purpose. While I recognize there are other root causes of urban violence, at its core lies the broken black family and the issue of fatherlessness. We must stop denying this reality and work to restore what has historically been the strength of black America: the family.
