Too many terrible events in history have been justified with "this group of people deserves no compassion or empathy, only suffering, because they are the enemy/evil/degenerate"

Having empathy and compassion even for horrible people is actually a kind of important part of being a decent person.
Because if you can tell yourself that any type of person, for any reason, doesn't deserve these things, you may be convinced to turn it on undeserving targets.

And having empathy and compassion for awful people doesn't mean forgiving them for shitty things they've done, or not holding them accountable for their awful behavior either. It just means not laughing at another person's suffering and pain.
