Acting High Commissioner Nardia Simpson was honoured to meet Hon. Adviser Nahid Islam to discuss his priorities for building an ICT sector that supports the aspirations of all Bangladeshis.
Great discussion today with Hon Adviser for ICT, Information and Broadcasting, Nahid Islam.
We discussed his priorities for 🇬🇧 🇧🇩 work on ICT, innovation and cyber security as well as our shared values of media freedom, transparency and accountability.
Some years after 1st writing on Bangladesh https://t.co/30gC5OR8KI me @EveningStandard made tv there!
We have cautious grounds for optimism with new government but retribution is wrong
A future needs building where democracy matters not just stability

ALERT: It is being reported (though not independently confirmed) that at 3.30 pm #Bangladesh time, three student quota leaders/organisers were picked up by Detective Branch police officers from Gonoshastho hospital in Dhanmondi 6 in the capital city of Dhaka. They are Nahid Islam, who was earlier picked up a few days ago (and on his release reported he was tortured) and then two other student organisers Asif Mahmud and Baree Majumdar. I am reporting it now to at least stop them being secretly detained/disappeared (as often happens in Bangladesh)
#WATCH: When I asked about the situation, approximately 50 people have been killed by forces loyal to PM Hasina, including journalists. Her party wing, Chhatra League, has been mostly targeting girls and women. There have been frequent internet shutdowns, and all rights have been looted in Bangladesh.
@UN_Spokesperson responded: @antonioguterres is deeply concerned by the reported dozens of deaths in Bangladesh including journalist and calls for restraint.
Ongoing brutal attacks by the regime on the massive student protests in Bangladesh have prompted Ambassador William B. Milam to issue this statement on behalf of the Right to Freedom.
Governments must protect the rights and provide opportunities for all their citizens. The right to protest is a human right. I call on the government of #Bangladesh to correct course. Countries cannot live in the past! https://t.co/W6CZX6WfJS
Threatening, muzzling, suppressing, intimidating, or blocking—these are among their tools. Despite this, my voice will grow louder, and my pen will continue to write across borders.
Questions are welcome where freedom matters, but are blocked where freedom can't shine. Threatening journalists is a crime and is never acceptable. Period. @behlihyi@meeganguly@amnestysasia@RSF_inter@freedomhouse@rtoforg@CPJAsia@whca@UNCANews@AngelitaBaeyens@State_SCA
#WATCH | This is how the DoS Spox responded to my questions today about #ChatraLeague's brutal attacks on student protesters in #Bangladesh. The regime's inhumane actions have led to at least 7 students being killed. I was a bit emotional in the briefing room describing the horrific incident. #protect_student #ProtectBangladesh #ProtectTheProtest #QuotaMovement
As always, insightful analysis by Ali Riaz on #Bangladesh’s protests: “Because Hasina’s government doesn’t have the popular mandate, it has very few instruments in its toolbox to face off challenges to its power – except the use of force.”

This is the consequence of years of impunity. Bangladesh law enforcers do now even feel a need to hide their crimes, as the government turns a blind eye.
he was SH0T to D3ATH just for demanding a discrimination free system. until now 4 students has been k!lled. We need international help! intl moots please help us by liking/rtwting i’m begging🙏
