A new study by @NationalCorn found:

-U.S. corn seed prices averaged 68% higher than Brazil’s
-Insecticide prices averaged 87% higher
-Some fungicides cost more than double what Brazilian farmers paid
-Many herbicide comparisons also approached double Brazilian price levels

For NCGA President Jed Bower, an Ohio farmer, the findings confirm concerns many growers have held for years: “It sure doesn’t look like we’re the low-cost producer anymore,” Bower says. “The study shows the American farmer is really paying for all the innovation and research for the rest of the world to take advantage of.”

I have read and reread this quote a dozen times and I get angrier each time.

What has rural America been doing for decades, if not fighting for its life?

We’ve lost 2/3 of our farms since WW2 and we’re about to lose more. Farm bankruptcies are rising. Farmer su*c*des are rising.

Stamford has lost half its population since the 1950 census as a result of the decline of the rural economy. We are one of the lucky ones. There are towns in every county around us that no longer exist or are barely hanging on.

The lack of good jobs on the farm and in town have pushed generations out of rural communities, and they rarely come back. Too many who stay are forced into low pay jobs with limited opportunity for advancement.

Drugs have been pushed in to every corner of rural America, from Appalachia to the Rolling Plains to the West, and they’ve wrecked lives and families as people are coping for other struggles.

But by all means, let’s save the Argentinians first. They’re the ones who cast the votes for American politicians, pay taxes to to underwrite the American government, and bleed and die when American politicians decide war is profitable for politics.

Give me a freaking break.

Local elevators phased out delivery of sunflowers and are currently doing the same to milo, largely because there is no market

COP numbers out of our control magically go up by that same number. It’s been happening for decades now. It’s hard to get ahead when the goalposts keep moving
