Who’s behind this clearly planned attack on one of the most successful and highly renowned part of our UK economy? £40 billion in teaching and research, and investment in key local communities across the country.
Who is playing this dangerous game, when they themselves, and undoubtedly their offspring, have benefited so much from higher education? Growth, productivity and, yes, levelling up are all absolutely dependent on a successful higher education system which allows for resources to go into discovering new vaccines, treatments and major innovations in science and engineering.
Education ministers have admitted that there is “no evidence” that domestic students are being squeezed out by the recruitment of international applicants who pay substantially for their courses and living costs, and then spread the word and the value of our life and democracy across the world.
What signal does this send to those we want to come here, or to the researchers we want to recruit following the loss of billions of pounds of research funding, because only now have we rejoined the Horizon project following Brexit.
Time to stand up for one of the success stories for the UK at a time where there is so little good news to shout about.
Really enjoyable, day of positive discussions on the role of innovation in supporting growth and levelling up. Huge thanks to @N8research@sheffielduni and @theRSAorg for the invitation #UpNorth
@EdWhiting1 @luhc @UniversityLeeds@sheffielduni@biztradegovuk@theRSAorg It’s our final panel session and the focus is on South Yorkshire. Kate Josephs @SheffCouncil describes innovation as being in the region’s bloodstream - it’s the home of makers and creators. Importantly though they are also doing the hard work of building collaboration. #UPNorth
