The SHA Renal Replacement Therapy Tariff for Kidney Transplant management is rigged to throw patients off at every turn. Only accessible at KNH & MTRH,it is out of reach to many. It only allows one access per month meaning you can't get labs and meds same month. Hii ni Hujuma!
Today we mark World Kidney Day 2026! ๐๐
A reminder that healthy kidneys are vital for healthy lives. Letโs prioritize early screening, prevention, and care while embracing this yearโs theme: โCaring for People, Protecting the Planet.โ

People who receive a kidney transplant generally live longer than those who remain on dialysis. Taking good care of yourself and your new kidney gives you the best chance for a longer, healthier life.

What a significant milestone! The EAC NCD Framework (2024โ2030) has officially been launched at the National #NCDConference 2025 @ncdalliance@eancdalliance@MOH_Kenya The framework advances advocacy, improves data systems, strengthens governance & boosts sustainable financing.
The organ transplant waiting list is carefully managed to match donors and recipients by blood type, tissue compatibility, urgency, time waiting, and location. But demand far exceeds supply โ leading to long waits and tough decisions. We urgently need more donors.
We are honoured to join the First National NCD Conference 2025.
Together with @MOH_Kenya, NCD advocates, experts & partners, weโre advancing dialogue & action for stronger prevention, early detection & integrated PHC care.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of giving an in-depth presentation on Infection-Related Glomerulonephritis (IRGN) โ formerly called Post-Infectious or Post-Streptococcal GN, during the Renal Pathology Workshop sponsored by Dr. Kalebi Labs (DKL) as part of the Kenya Renal Association Conference (KRACON) at PrideInn Paradise Resort, Mombasa.
It was a fantastic afternoon session on Immune-Mediated Glomerulonephritis, alongside my colleagues Dr. Anderson Mutuiri (AKUH) who spoke on IgA Nephropathy & Dr. Kibet Keitany (MTRH) spoke about Lupus Nephritis.
I always enjoy sessions like these where we get to bridge the gap between pathology and clinical nephrology, breaking down the histopathology and lab diagnosis of renal diseases into something clear, practical, and relatable for clinicians to apply in their regular practice.
One of the highlights for me was hearing from two professors in the audience โ one my former teacher at UoN and another visiting from a neighboring country โ who said my presentation helped them understand glomerulonephritis in a simpler and clearer way than ever before. That truly made my day! ๐
Today, Iโll be teaming up with my colleague Dr. Rabia Mukadam, PhD, our Head of Molecular & Genetics Lab at DKL, to talk about Nephrogenetic Testing and Recent Advances in Renal Diagnostics โ from point-of-care tests to modern molecular assays.
Always grateful to Kenya Renal Association (KRA) for the chance to share, learn, and connect.

Women are at least as likely as men to develop Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), if not more so.
CKD affects approximately 195 million women worldwide and is the eighth leading cause of death in women.

#SHAnannigans: SHA has capped access to transplant benefit package not on the 200k/yr limit, but on 12 visits. Each access counts as a visit. Patients who have exceeded 12 visits but not exhausted the 200k have been blocked from accessing the benefit. @_shakenya@DrMercyHealth
A living donor is someone who chooses to donate one of their kidneys while still alive. Since most people have two kidneys and can live a healthy life with just one, this donation can be life-saving.

Iโm raising my voice ahead of the World Health Assembly to urge @UN Member States to support the @WHO Kidney Health Resolution.
As a patient in Malaysia, I witness firsthand how kidney disease silently affects lives. Prevention is essentialโand thatโs why this is important.
