@ScribbleSnark @BookwormBlues It's really a tool that's difficult to work around. A one-size-fits-all character action that can communicate denial, dissent, disdain, disappointment, it goes on. So useful. And almost no readers will notice or care. But it can be a fun challenge to find creative substitutions.

Editor's Hot Take #2:
Guidelines say to omit the word 'that' almost always, thus it's being omitted far too often. 'That/which' shoulders a lot of meaning, so dropping it can easily distort a reader's interpretation. The default should be to leave it in, then evaluate from there.
