@RufusPeabody esp true in a gambling context where payoff is binary, getting outliers wrong is just as costly as getting anything else wrong. messing up outliers much more costly when payoff is proportional to margin of error e.g. if trading a financial asset
@saberpowers This is super cool, thanks for sharing Scott
1 comment - may be lack of domain knowledge on my end but shouldn't blockers have an effect on if the Attack errors at the top level of the outcome tree? Anecdotally looks like errors are sometimes induced by block deterrence
Please give this a read and send to anyone who might be interested! Would love to hear any thoughts, I fully acknowledge that there's a very high likelihood these and any other takes I have are wrong.
I've put up some writing here: https://t.co/HKvznEjQ2b. Most of these are sports-related but I'm hoping to explore other areas of interest as well. I'll highlight 2 of the pieces below:
This may be strategic esp. for less skilled teams: opposing retention rates from throw-ins are low, and you're likely to recover the ball in a dangerous area rather than risking losing the ball near your own goal or conceding a goal kick. Read more here https://t.co/ZyEWFpOxMo
@MC_of_A fun list but may say more about assumptions in the xG model than particular players abilities. for instance if the model includes "off-footed shot" as a feature 2 footed guys like Sonny are gonna overperform, if "counterattack" isn't included then e.g. Bale might overperform
@vim_dzl #2 also requires a vibe check on the other players — have gotten screwed when it’s clearly irrational for someone else to keep competing but they do so you waste hella resources maintaining that lead, prisoners dilemma lose lose box
@deanondraft Handle yes but idt he has the first step to use it as well as he could. We’ll see but I think a better median comp would be iguodala with better offense and worse defense
@deanondraft Imo PGs explosiveness (esp when younger) also gives him the capacity to do things that Franz just can’t as well like generate turnovers, clean blow bys, dominant transition play; would take a lot of the small things to compensate. But not impossible
