There's no shortage of conversation about yield in cash investing. But how much attention are we paying to the risk that sits behind that yield?

A bank deposit, a money market fund or other cash fund, and a secured repo can offer similar returns, yet carry quite different risks.

Our new paper, Beyond Yield: A treasurer's guide to cash as an asset class, challenges conventional thinking about institutional cash investing.

From credit and liquidity risk to diversification and risk-adjusted returns, it explores what treasurers should consider beyond the headline yield.

Because what you earn matters. But the risk you take to earn it matters more.

Following our recent approval to become a Super Validator on the @CantonNetwork, our Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer Matthew Longhurst spoke to Disrupts Media about what this means for the future of corporate cash investment.

As awareness of on-chain assets grows, so does the potential for treasurers to benefit from greater asset mobility and access to liquidity, while maintaining the privacy and control institutional investors require.

Matthew explains how TreasurySpring is laying the foundations for these capabilities – starting with bringing the ownership component of our Fixed-Term Fund (FTF) share register on-chain – while preserving the existing client experience.

Six organisations had Super Validator proposals approved in September. Here’s what each plans to bring to Canton.

• @Paxos: Connect its stablecoin platform to Canton and issue $20m within six months of approval. It also plans to offer 24/7 minting and redemption for approved users.

• @TreasurySpring: Use Canton to record who owns its fund shares. Its first milestone includes targets of $10m outstanding and $15m in total issuance within three months of approval.

• Shinhan Asset Management: Help Korean financial firms connect to Canton, with plans for issuing assets and settling transactions in Korean won.

• @LSEGplc: Bring its experience in financial markets, payments and settling trades to help more institutions use Canton.

• @MarexGlobal: Help financial firms settle transactions and use assets as collateral on Canton, drawing on its trading, clearing and financing business.

• @a16zcrypto: Bring experience from backing crypto companies and supporting developers, alongside knowledge of how blockchain networks are built and run.

Approval comes with commitments. Their associated $CC rewards depend on milestones being met, verified and approved.

Paxos and TreasurySpring have published specific targets. The detailed milestones for the other four haven’t been made public.

Could AI agents trigger the next corporate bank run?

In July UK companies earned 1.97% on instant-access deposits. Bank Rate was 3.75%. On £10m that's £178k a year left on the table.

Most treasury teams don't have time to chase that. AI agents might.

In this month's WTFTF Henry Adams unpacks a busy month for rates, with three major economies hiking, inflation proving stubborn, and markets still sitting near record highs.

He also looks at geopolitical flashpoints, the US midterms, fiscal pressure in France, and what a "higher for longer, potentially sooner" backdrop means for anyone holding cash.

Another major institution joins Canton's list of SVs.

@TreasurySpring, a cash management platform which serves over 1,000 institutional clients, has become an official @CantonNetwork super validator, per @CantonFdn.

It joins an impressive list that already includes the likes of @Chainlink, @Visa, @The_DTCC and many others.

TreasurySpring has evolved. 🪄

10 years ago, we built TreasurySpring around a simple belief: all institutions should be able to invest cash securely, irrespective of their size, sector, or geography.

Today, the platform gives 1000+ institutions across 32 countries access to 120+ counterparties and 9 currencies. Our new brand identity reflects the global business we’ve become, and the one we’re continuing to build.

Institutional in credibility. Modern in delivery.

We are happy to welcome @TreasurySpring to @CantonNetwork as a Super Validator through CIP-0122 (Weight 4).

TreasurySpring, a cash investment platform and vertically integrated regulated fund manager serving over 1,000 institutional clients across the UK, EU, and US, joins as part of a milestone-based program focused on native issuance of Fixed-Term Fund Shares and register infrastructure on Canton.

We're glad to have TreasurySpring at the table!

"The register is the foundation on which every later use case depends."

Matthew Longhurst on why TreasurySpring is beginning with the ownership record rather than a client-facing feature: https://t.co/ZY7YAzd1t1

[Fairmint @fairmint]

Putting the ownership register onchain while keeping the transfer agent responsible for administering it is a strong model for institutional assets.

The infrastructure changes. The client experience doesn't have to.

Clients will not need to operate a wallet or manage cryptographic keys themselves. The Transfer Agent will continue to administer the register and perform its existing responsibilities.
