YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER is an immense showcase for Mahershala Ali’s many talents proving once again why he’s one of the best actors of his generation. He and filmmaker Bassam Tariq deliver a badass, sword-wielding, good-hearted hitman for the ages who is fiercely protective of his family, with a simple but muscular story steeped in spiritual and culturally specific layers, and deeply rooted in character. Several of the action sequences hit especially hard because we’re so invested in Ali’s character and performance. The ending may be divisive, but I found it poetic, soul-shaking and extremely satisfying. Think “Ghost Dog” meets “Drive” through the lens of Muslim teachings with the kind of inner conflict I especially respond to. Who needs Blade when we got this banger?
i wake up, i cry over spilt milk, put all of my eggs in one basket, bite off more than i can chew, jump the gun, fly off the handle and then die on that hill
David Cross says he will “never work with” any of the ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ production crew again:
“They were doing sh*tty things on purpose, I don’t know what to tell you […] They were just so awful to me.”
