Those in favour of extending Sunday Trading rules point to a '3.2% sales increase' during 2012 when shops opened longer during the Olympics, but provide no source.
The truth is, according to the ONS, Y-o-Y sales growth was weaker in summer 2012 than both 2011 and 2013.
The existing Sunday Trading laws strike the right balance between the needs of shopworkers, consumers, high streets, small shops and supermarkets.
Changing these laws would only displace trade from the local shops that have been keeping communities going during this pandemic.
Our General Secretary @paddylillis has today written to the Business Secretary opposing plans to deregulate Sunday trading. Usdaw members and their colleagues deserve better than this opportunistic attack on a longstanding compromise. #GiveShopworkersABreak
