A goal of any young adult, as they age, should 100% be to grow out of the cultural identity into which they were born. It’s a sufficient starting point for an identity, but failing to grow into an individual makes you and those around you victims of by-gone cultural norms. Like Terrence McKenna said, “Culture is not your friend.” Or X-Ray Spex “Identity is the crisis. Can’t you see?”

Deep inner suffering inevitably arises when the human person is reduced to performance, consumption, or a statistical datum. Many young people today live under the yoke of expectations to perform, immersed in an exasperated competitiveness that generates anxiety, fear of not measuring up, and disorientation.
