The vast majority of nerds dont care about diversity if the show is good and the characters are likable.
Im sure there's some people who wouldn't like that Sam is a captain doctor girl boss today and view it as a sign the show was going to be polotical dreck. I know that because some people thought that and didn't initially like Sam...when the show first aired in 1997. To this day, I typically skip S1E4 "Emancipation" because it's not a very good episode and it has a forced political narrative. They didn't do more episodes like Emancipation after S1.
In the 1990s, showrunners actually cared about audience reactions and audiences didn't like "just because my sex organs are on the inside instead of the outside doesn't mean I can't handle whatever you can handle" from jump. To this day and from the day it aired, Sams introduction is an off-putting one, and Emancipation 3 episodes later doesn't help.
But the showrunners actually gave a damn, stopped telling us Sam was a girl boss, and let her just be a real character.
I love Sam, and I seriously considered joining USAF ROTC in college because of her. That's what a good scifi show like SG1 and Star Trek used to be : aspirational. Now its all a race to the bottom.
