🫡 "drill sergeant" is the most popular AI coach personality on Summit
In December, my co-founder Tripp and I decided to work with a real life drill sergeant to experience this IRL (h/t to @Zach_Zayac for the hook up). Short answer was it was transformative and we're sticking with goals still 1 month after our engagement ended. Why was this so effective? Learnings below.
🤔 Tying goals to a strong WHY
Both Tripp and I wanted to get back into a consistent workout routine. Chris (the IRL sergeant) had us go a level deeper - WHY was this important? And tying this back to our ultimate goal - building a successful startup. By consistently working out, we were putting ourselves in the optimal position to work on Summit. Therefore when we missed a workout, we weren't just skipping a workout, we were actively hurting the success of the company.
🤬 Having escalation nudges with consequences
When we first started working with Chris, he asked us "are you ok if I yell at you a bit?" Wanting the full experience - we said yes! Chris would text us every morning to get up, and if we didn't text back within 5 minutes, we'd get another text, and then a phone call. We had to send Chris pictures of when we did our workouts (and not just a selfie - showing sweat somewhere - example below). We didn't miss a single day of working out due to this protocol and ultimately - not wanting to let Chris down and burn some social capital.
👀 Daily reflection
At the end of each day, we'd text Chris answers to 1) what was our plan 2) did we achieve our plan 3) how did this make us feel 4) what we need to adjust for the next day. Taking time to do this was powerful - turns out when we worked out first thing in the morning, we had more energy, which led to better workdays, which turned into wanting to start the next day in the same way. Without this reflection, it'd be easy gloss over the benefits
All of the above being said, it wasn't all roses. Transparently - it was really intense and stressful at times. Multiple days I was working out at 2/3am in the morning due to travel or it being the only time I could make it happen. Towards the tail end, I felt myself resenting the nudges a little bit "of course I'm going to workout, I don't need to be reminded!". These aren't necessarily bad things, just observations, living with this level of accountability every single day is definitely not for everyone and every situation.
Most importantly - now that we're a month removed from working with Chris - how are we doing? Have the goals lasted?
Answer: yes! we've stuck with our consistency (no doubt partially thanks to our Summit drill sergeants :) Having the time with Chris was a nice "turbo boost" to our goals and habits and has inspired a lot for how we think about how Summit can be more effective and result in similar outcomes. We imagine having these turbo boosts are going to be really effective when starting new habits/goals or when we've fallen off and need to get back on track.
As far as what's next, we'll be folding in learnings from this experience into Summit (we actually just launched the first version of our "turbo mode" today!) and continuing to explore how the intersection of technology, accountability, and coaching can help us all better progress towards our most important goals.
