You *have* to be charitability-maxxing in your (low-stakes) assumptions of other people, it's such a life hack.

That person taking a while to text me back? Maybe they're nervous and trying to get the text right!

That person I find attractive? Maybe they find me attractive too and have been hoping that I would reach out!

That person who wronged me? Maybe they're sorry and are taking some time to sort through their thoughts before re-engaging.

If we assume incorrectly, oh well - we had some time enjoying a pleasant delusion.

If we're right, we show up with energy that's ready to receive the awesome thing.

But most often, the warmth, receptivity & generosity we're holding **is the thing that ends up shaping our interactions with the person in a positive direction at all.**

So many of the above things become true, even if they weren't to start with. Pascal's wager of relationality, or something.

예전엔 사람을 좋아하게 되면
그 사람의 취향이 가장 궁금했음.

무슨 음악 듣는지.
어떤 영화 좋아하는지.
인스타에는 뭘 올리는지.
카페 가면 뭘 시키는지.

그런 걸 하나씩 알아가는 게 재밌었음.

근데 나이 먹고 연애 몇 번 해보니까
취향은 생각보다 별로 안 중요한 것 같음.

오히려 진짜 중요한 건 겉으로는
절대 안 보이는 것들이었음.

퇴근하고 집에 오면 바로 씻는 사람인지.
주말에 알람 없이도 일찍 일어나는 사람인지.
택배 상자를 며칠 동안 안 버리는 사람인지.

설거지를 바로 하는 사람인지.
빨래를 모아서 하는 사람인지.
아프면 병원 가는 사람인지.
아픈데 버티는 사람인지.

돈을 아끼는 사람인지.
돈을 쓰는 기준이 있는 사람인지.

생각해보면 사람을 좋아하게 만드는 건
취향인데 사람을 계속 좋아하게 만드는 건
생활인 것 같음.

예쁜 카페를 좋아하는 건 중요하지 않았음.

근데 카페 들어가서 직원한테
어떻게 말하는지는 중요했음.

맛집을 얼마나 아는지는 중요하지 않았음.

근데 식당에서 물 갖다주는 사람한테
어떻게 대하는지는 중요했음.

연애 초반에는 상대가 나를 좋아하는지
궁금했는데 시간이 지나니까

상대가 자기 자신을
어떻게 다루는지가 더 궁금해졌음.

방이 너무 더러우면 왜 그런지.
돈이 없으면 어떻게 행동하는지.
스트레스 받으면 누구를 찾는지.
실수했을 때 사과할 줄 아는지.

생각보다 사람의 대부분은
특별한 순간보다
평범한 화요일 저녁에 드러났음.

여행 가서 찍은 예쁜 사진보다
비 오는 날 우산 하나 들고
편의점 가는 모습에서 더 많이 알게 됐음.

그래서 이제는 누군가를 좋아하게 되면
그 사람이랑 제주도를 갈 수 있을지보다
마트를 갈 수 있을지가 더 궁금함.

제주도는 1년에 몇 번 가지만
마트는 일주일에 두세 번 가니까.

결국 같이 살아간다는 건
특별한 이벤트 몇 번보다
별일 없는 하루 수천 번을
공유하는 일이었던 것 같음.
