Udhayanidhi Stalin's Speech and Arrest Condemnable: The Ruling Party and the
Opposition Should Pursue Constructive Politics!

Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested this morning over certain remarks he made about Chief Minister Vijay during yesterday's protest in Thanjavur against the proposed Mekedatu Dam. Both Udhayanidhi Stalin's speech and his arrest are condemnable; both could and should have been avoided.

The remarks made by Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin during the Thanjavur protest were, in no way, acceptable and lacked dignity. A person who has served as Deputy Chief Minister and now holds the responsibility of Leader of the Opposition should learn to speak in a respectful and dignified manner.

At the same time, there was no need to arrest Udhayanidhi Stalin with such haste. Even after the High Court had directed that he should not be arrested until 12:00 noon, there was no urgency to arrest the Leader of the Opposition, especially when the Legislative Assembly is scheduled to convene tomorrow. The extraordinary urgency shown by the government and the police in carrying out this arrest—an urgency that has not been demonstrated in addressing many of Tamil Nadu's pressing issues—suggests that the action was driven purely by political considerations.

Tamil Nadu is facing numerous issues that require immediate attention. The ruling party and the opposition should focus their efforts on resolving those problems rather than engaging in actions of this nature. At least from now on, both the ruling party and the opposition should work towards constructive politics. The government must also ensure that the arrest of Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin does not, in any way, lead to a deterioration of law and order in the state.
