I was fortunate enough to get a private screening of the film, Killers of the Flower Moon earlier this month. Having been marginally released from my NDA with the premiere of the film today at Cannes, I have a few thoughts.
A 16 year old was shot for ringing the wrong doorbell.
A 20 year old was shot and killed for driving down the wrong driveway.
An 18 year old is in critical condition for trying to get into the wrong car.
And a 6 year old and her dad were shot because her basketball rolled onto the wrong lawn.
In a nation armed to the teeth & perpetually primed for war, these tragedies are only going to happen more often, not less.
What the hell are we doing?
At the same time that GOP lawmakers scapegoat trans people and ban books to “protect kids,” they’ve also voted down gun control and free school lunches, and defunded public schools.
And now they’re topping it off with child labor.
Turns out it wasn’t about the kids after all.
Child labor violations have exploded since the start of the pandemic — up 37% last year. Instead of cracking down, states are lining up to legalize the practices.
Hy-Vee, a midwest grocery chain, is one of the biggest employers in Iowa and one of the biggest proponents of the child labor bill. They’re also one of the biggest violators of child labor law.
Since 2000, Hy-Vee has been fined over $700,000 for over 30 labor law violations.
