The land of engineers vs the land of managers

There is a fundamental difference between a society that is organized around making things and one organized around managing people who make things.

The engineer lives under the tyranny of reality.

You cannot negotiate with gravity.
A reactor either works or it doesn’t.
A bridge either stands or falls.

The manager operates in a different universe – one of meetings, incentives, credentials, narratives, alliances and permissions.

And here is the paradox:

Engineers create the wealth. Managers often end up controlling it.

Why?

Because the engineer is busy solving the problem.

The manager is busy understanding the organization – and scheming…

Give the second enough time and the people who build the machine eventually find themselves reporting to people whose principal skill is talking and building nothing.

You could see this transformation in the 1990s. The vocabulary itself was revealing: suddenly technical competence was not enough. You needed "communication," "stakeholder management," "networking."

None of these things is inherently bad.

But once the ability to navigate the system becomes more valuable than the ability to produce the result, the system begins selecting for a very different kind of person.

And this is where the political connection becomes interesting.

Capitalism needs engineers.
Socialism needs managers.

Capitalism ultimately asks:

What can you produce that someone values enough to pay for?

A managerial-bureaucratic system asks:

Can you obtain the permission, budget, position or institutional support to make it happen?

The first rewards competence because reality is the judge.

The second rewards proximity to power because the institution is the judge.

This may help explain one of the great transformations of post-war France: the relative rise of administrative and business elites alongside the gradual weakening of the country’s extraordinary engineering and industrial culture.

France did not suddenly become less intelligent.

It increasingly rewarded a different kind of intelligence.

The people who build things and the people who run the system are not the same people.

And when the second group becomes dominant, something profound happens:

The civilization stops asking "Does it work?"

It starts asking "Is it approved?"

That is the moment when the land of engineers becomes the land of managers.

And eventually, the managers start managing the decline.

Sunlight at Earth's surface has surged since the 1980s.

Germany's Potsdam station shows 15 more W/m² of solar energy reaching the ground than during the 1970s dimming era.

The Netherlands, Switzerland and Japan all show the same trend. Austria shows even more: 23 extra W/m².

It's called 'global brightening.' As air pollution dropped, the atmosphere cleared and sunlight flooded back in.

That increase in surface radiation is 10 times larger than the forcing from CO2 over the same period.

In short: the air got cleaner, the sunlight stronger and the land a little warmer. The data say so, the physics say so, it's only the narrative that doesn't.

ideologically driven things. But what makes white supremacy or Islamophobia different from antisemitism?

America imported millions of African slaves, Native Americans faced forced marches and genocide, and Muslims are being massacred in China today.

So what makes antisemitism so different?

Ayaan Hirsi Ali: Two things.

First, America and Western Europe have reckoned with their past.

We had slavery, we fought a war and ended it. We had segregation, we fought another major battle and ended it. We had the Civil Rights Movement.

And the people leading many of those emancipation movements were Christians inspired by the Bible.

Second, antisemitism is the oldest hatred in humanity, and you find it across the entire world.

What made the West different was that after nearly exterminating its Jewish population, it looked honestly in the mirror and confronted what it had done.

Islamophobia is a made-up word.
It's been created by a political movement that wants to exploit Western guilt to achieve its ultimate goal: the revival of the caliphate.

And the goal of that movement is to convert people to Islam whether they want to or not.

Those who refuse, she says, could face violence.

That's part of what I mean by subversion, active measures and asymmetric warfare.

The Islamists have become incredibly successful against nations with enormous military and economic power.
Islam is spreading.

They've regained Afghanistan. They have Iraq. They have Syria.

And Muslim governments themselves are afraid of what the Islamist movement could do to them.

They're exploiting principles like freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom of association.

We need to understand that and find a way to preserve our principles while beating the Islamists at their own game.

Student : Is there room for compromise between principles?

Ayaan Hirsi Ali: If I want to kill you and behead you unless you convert to the religion I dictate, what would be the place of compromise?

Student : I wouldn't mind converting, since I'm agnostic, but I understand some people wouldn't share that vision...

There are two ways of seeing human nature.

The utopian vision says people are basically good. When they loot, kill, or destroy, something external must have corrupted them.

The tragic vision says the opposite: most people are self-interested. They will always put family and personal interest first. You can’t wish that away.

The only workable solution is systems (like markets) that turn self-interest into something productive for everyone else.

Ironically, the vision that sounds nicest produces the worst results. The one that accepts human limits produces the best ones we can actually get.

Angela Rayner must explain why her government department has deleted all responses to the Working Group tasked with drafting the official definition of Islamophobia — now repackaged as “anti-Muslim hostility”.

The Free Speech Union exposed that all five members of the group had troubling links to Islamist groups.

This definition has revived Britain’s blasphemy laws via the back door for Islam alone. It is already having a chilling effect on free speech.

The public deserves to know why these responses were deleted.

The real GOAT.

Ludwig von Mises rebuilt economics from the foundation up, and a comparison to Einstein is not flattery: it is a structural observation about what each man did to his field.

Einstein rewrote physics by showing that measurements of space and time depended on the observer's frame of reference. Mises did something comparably radical in 1912 with The Theory of Money and Credit, then again in 1920 with the socialist calculation paper, and definitively in 1949 with Human Action: he showed that economic calculation is impossible without private property in capital goods, because prices emerge only from voluntary exchange. The Soviet planners in Moscow were not making policy errors you could fix with better data. They were attempting something logically incoherent, the way you cannot find a square root of a color. Stalin murdered millions chasing a mathematical phantom that Mises proved impossible before the Soviet state was even ten years old.

What separates Mises from most geniuses is the range. Einstein worked physics. Mises worked epistemology, monetary theory, capital theory, business cycle theory, and political philosophy simultaneously, weaving them into a single coherent system. His 1922 book Socialism predicted the collapse of every centrally planned economy with the precision of a structural engineer predicting which wall bears load. The Berlin Wall fell in 1989. The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. The math was settled in 1922.

The state, being an institution that lives by compulsion rather than consent, cannot tolerate this kind of clarity. Governments fund universities. Universities employ economists. Those economists publish papers justifying central banking, redistribution, and regulation, because tenure flows toward conclusions that flatter power. Mises spent years teaching in Vienna without a paid university position, funding himself through the Chamber of Commerce. He was excluded not because he was wrong, but because clarity about power's limits threatens the institutions that distribute tenure.

You want to rank intellectual giants; let's rank them by what they overturned and what they built in its place. Mises overturned classical economics, demolished the theoretical case for socialism, and constructed a complete science of human choice on aprioristic foundations. Einstein, asked about Mises by journalist Henry Hazlitt in the 1940s, expressed genuine admiration. The greatest physicist of the 20th century respected the greatest economist. The tenured mediocrities who ignored Mises respected neither.
