AOC Aligns with DSA Call to Abolish the Senate

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez recently stated she does not support elements of the Senate because they were “founded on Jim Crow.” (Video: AI)

This comes as the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) updated its platform in July 2026 to explicitly call for abolishing the Senate, with co-chair Ashik Siddique arguing it was “meant to serve very wealthy people” and lacks a point in a modern democracy.

AOC’s comments echo the DSA position that the upper chamber is structurally flawed and should be eliminated.

The Senate was established in 1789 under the U.S. Constitution, decades before Jim Crow laws emerged in the late 19th century.
