One year of What Women Want: Understanding the Female Voter in Modern India.

Exactly a year ago, my debut book — a labour of two decades worth of rigorous field work — hit the stands. The idea behind this book was to bring to the fore a phenomenon that deserved far more attention: the rise & evolution of the Indian woman voter.

For years, everyone spoke about the female voter. But few ventured deeper into understanding her aspirations, choices, agency and the forces shaping her political behaviour. This book was my attempt to bring her story, her voice and her rightful place in Indian democracy into sharper focus.

The past year has been incredibly fulfilling. From coveted literature festivals and talks at college campuses to podcasts, interaction at think-tanks and conversations at various embassies, the book has taken me to places I never imagined. More importantly, it has sparked conversations that I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of.

Thank you to everyone who picked up the book, read it, shared feedback, offered constructive criticism and engaged with its ideas. Every response has taught me something and made this journey worthwhile.

पुष्कर धामी की सरकार ने न सिर्फ़ उत्तराखंड की महिलाओं को निराश किया है, बल्कि पूरे राज्य की जनता को अलग-अलग तरीक़ों से चूना लगाया है।

ग्लोबल इन्वेस्टर्स समिट के नाम पर निवेश और विकास की बड़ी-बड़ी बातें की गईं, सफलता का ढोल पीटा गया। लेकिन हक़ीक़त में यह समिट सिर्फ़ आँकड़ों की बाज़ीगरी और प्रचार का एक बड़ा ढकोसला साबित हुआ।

निवेश की परिभाषा बदलकर और फ़र्ज़ी आँकड़े पेश करके भाजपा ने एक बार फिर जनता को गुमराह करने की कोशिश की है।

पुष्कर धामी की सरकार को अब जुमलेबाज़ी बंद करके 3,300 “निवेशकों” की सूची, उनके वास्तविक निवेश और ज़मीन पर उतारी गई परियोजनाओं का पूरा हिसाब-किताब सार्वजनिक करना चाहिए।

उत्तराखंड की जनता को दावे नहीं, हिसाब चाहिए।

Delhi Police is refusing to register an FIR on the assault of our students.

Two young women, Athira from Kerala and Ritu from Rajasthan, along with many others, were beaten by Delhi Police.

I have spoken to Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and Rajasthan PCC President Govind Singh Dotasra. A Zero FIR has already been registered in Kerala. We will pursue every legal route against the officers responsible, in Kerala, in Rajasthan and in the courts.

Brutality by Amit Shah's Delhi Police will not go unchecked.

In 1930, at Dharasana, Sarojini Naidu led unarmed satyagrahis into police lathis. Not one of them raised a hand. The world watched.

Police can break bones. They cannot break a satyagraha.

उत्तराखंड में निवेश के नाम पर धामी सरकार का फ़र्ज़ीवाड़ा - और यह BJP ‘डबल इंजन' मॉडल का एक और नमूना है।

Global Investors Summit का ढिंढोरा पीटा गया: 1,779 MoU, ₹3.56 लाख करोड़। रोडशो पर जनता के लगभग ₹100 करोड़ ख़र्च हुए | फिर सरकार ने ₹1 लाख करोड़ को "ज़मीन पर उतरा निवेश" बताया।

Newslaundry ने जाँचा कि यह निवेश किसका है:

* आटा चक्कियाँ, खाद-बीज की दुकानें और छोटे क्लीनिक "निवेशक" गिन लिए गए। कुछ को पता तक नहीं था।
* ₹35,279 करोड़ - यानी 35% - सरकारी बिजली कंपनियों के हैं।
* CSR और दान से चलने वाले एक स्कूल को ₹24.49 करोड़ का "निवेशक" बताया गया।
* ₹1,200 करोड़ के "निवेशक" की कमाई चार साल से शून्य है, और रिकॉर्ड में उसका एक भी कर्मचारी नहीं।
* दुबई-लंदन के रोडशो से ₹27,975 करोड़ का दावा हुआ, पर "ज़मीन पर उतरे" निवेशकों की सूची में इन दोनों शहरों की एक भी कंपनी नहीं।

और समिट से सिर्फ़ सात दिन पहले, 1 दिसंबर 2023 को, "निवेश" की परिभाषा ही ढीली कर दी गई। इसे कहते हैं: पहले नियम बदलो, फिर आँकड़े बताओ।

मुख्यमंत्री 3,300 "निवेशकों" की पूरी सूची सार्वजनिक करें।

निवेश कागज़ पर। रोज़गार नारों में। और उत्तराखंड के युवाओं के हिस्से - पेपर लीक।

I’d like to thank every single person who came out today for this protest. I'd also like to thank the millions of people who showed support in their own way at 3pm. Thank you to the leaders of INDIA bloc, all the workers of the Congress party and workers of the INDIA bloc.

Today was a very important day because we needed to show the government that the people of India are not going to be intimidated. You cannot beat us, threaten us, frighten us. We will not accept being bullied.

I was wondering where the cowards of the RSS who were beating the young children day before yesterday were. Where were those people? Because I didn’t see them.

When we are standing there and when the people of India are standing there, why don’t you come out? Why don’t you wear your little scarves and come out and see what happens?

Because you’re essentially, like the Prime Minister of India, bullies. You cannot stand up. You can only use power to fight.

So, it’s very heartening to see what happened. I’m proud of everybody. Everybody worked like a team.

As I said in my press conference, there are no parallel protests. It’s one protest, and it’s a protest where everybody is standing together. Every single person is going to stand against these killers of our Constitution, these killers of our democracy. And we’re not going to back down.

I’d also like to thank everybody from civil society organisations who came, supported us. We value your support, and we love all of you.

Thank you all for coming out and defending the idea of India, the idea of the Constitution, the idea of our democracy.

आज के इस विरोध प्रदर्शन में शामिल होने वाले हर एक व्यक्ति का मैं दिल से धन्यवाद करना चाहता हूँ। उन करोड़ों लोगों का भी धन्यवाद, जिन्होंने दोपहर 3 बजे अपने-अपने तरीके से इस आंदोलन को समर्थन दिया। INDIA गठबंधन के नेताओं, कांग्रेस पार्टी के सभी कार्यकर्ताओं और INDIA गठबंधन के तमाम कार्यकर्ताओं का भी बहुत-बहुत धन्यवाद।

जब हम वहाँ खड़े हैं, जब देश की जनता वहाँ खड़ी है, तो तुम बाहर क्यों नहीं आते? अपनी छोटी-छोटी गमछियाँ पहनकर क्यों नहीं बाहर आते हो और देखते हो कि क्या होता है?

क्योंकि तुम भी देश के प्रधानमंत्री की तरह सिर्फ़ गुंडागर्दी करना जानते हो। तुममें सामने आकर खड़े होने की हिम्मत नहीं है। तुम सिर्फ़ सत्ता और ताक़त के दम पर लड़ सकते हो।

इसलिए आज जो कुछ हुआ, उसे देखकर बहुत खुशी होती है। मुझे आप सभी पर गर्व है। सबने एक टीम की तरह काम किया।

जैसा कि मैंने अपनी प्रेस कॉन्फ्रेंस में कहा था, ये अलग-अलग प्रदर्शन नहीं हैं। यह एक ही आंदोलन है, जिसमें हम सब एक साथ खड़े हैं।

हममें से हर एक व्यक्ति संविधान के इन हत्यारों, हमारे लोकतंत्र को कुचलने वालों के ख़िलाफ़ खड़ा होगा। और हम एक कदम भी पीछे नहीं हटेंगे।

The handling of the protestors yesterday by Bengaluru Police will be reviewed.

The right to peaceful protest is fundamental to our democracy. It must be respected, protected and never suppressed.

I have issued instructions to the police to ensure that no peaceful demonstration is disrupted.

I also appeal to all protesters to cooperate with the police and keep the authorities informed, so that their safety and the rights of others are protected as well.

The police are here to protect your rights, not to stand in the way of your voice.

Our responsibility is not merely to maintain law and order, but to create an environment where every citizen can express dissent freely, peacefully and without fear.

In a democracy, peaceful dissent is not a threat to law and order. It is a right that law and order must protect.
