I have never really understood the drama at the departure halls of Nigeria's international airports. Why are all those immigration and customs officials harassing and shaking down passengers?

Whenever I am leaving the US, I never ever see customs or immigration agents. Not once. The airline's desk staff handle the task of ensuring that my papers are in order. I imagine that my checked luggage is screened out of my sight. It's the case in pretty much every western airport I have been to.

Why is the Nigerian case different?
