@Shiloh70657703 @HenryLouisGates Most definitely. History tells us that many tribes saw their commonalities with enslaved Africans and also sheltered and protected runaways. One of my favorite stories is of the runaway Gullahs who sought refuge among the Seminole Nation and became known as “Black Seminoles.”
@Big_Worker@RealNativeTexas@HenryLouisGates Pharaoh Wyandanch, the last chief of the Montauk Tribe, is also a direct descendant of Chief Wyandanch as well so he would be a distant relative of mine.
@Big_Worker@RealNativeTexas@HenryLouisGates Here are some Montauk descendants in the early 1900s. They were paper genocided due to African admixture and reclassified as “Negroes.” This happened to quite a few Eastern Woodlands tribes.
@Big_Worker@RealNativeTexas@HenryLouisGates There was no paperwork but Algonquin tribes maintained an oral tradition of their genealogies. I’m a direct descendant of Catoneras and sachem Chief Wyandanch of the Montauk Tribe, Turtle Clan on my paternal side. I also have Siouxan ancestry on my maternal side as well.
@cee_card867 @Robin_the_1st @Big_Worker@HenryLouisGates One such example would be the indentured servants and enslaved peoples in Colonial Maryland and Virginia. I descend from these early colonial families and many of them still live in the area to this day. Paul Heinegg has compiled a directory: https://t.co/X7e7H928jw
