I grew up in the shadow of Purdue's campus--home to more astronauts than perhaps any other ed institution--and lived a couple of hours from Cape Canaveral the year Lovell orbited the moon on Christmas Eve. I was in awe of him and his fellow astronauts. RIP.
We are saddened by the passing of Jim Lovell, commander of Apollo 13 and a four-time spaceflight veteran.
Lovell's life and work inspired millions. His courage under pressure helped forge our path to the Moon and beyond—a journey that continues today. https://t.co/AjT8qmxsZI
@TomDienhart1 The good: I had several excellent English classes there, including my freshman composition class (changed my life; still have the book of essays we used). The bad: Com 114 speeches. The ugly: see "the bad". I never knew my underarms could produce so much sweat.
Dude loves the Flyers. Love that. Once saw him jogging on a treadmill in the Buccaneers facility on a Sat. afternoon before a Sunday game vs. the Eagles (a friend worked for the Bucs at the time and was giving me a tour). Seemed intense just jogging : )
Back to back boxes from Ohio and this time it's the Penguins from Youngstown State!
Some of my best friends in the world went to this university, and I freakin' LOVE the mascot.
Thank you Coach Phillips and @ysufootball for this awesome box, let's go 'GUINS!
@DustinEburg@GameDayGabi Amen. Went to Indy one Friday, cursed the traffic. Had to go to Chicago the following Friday and, while cursing the traffic muttered under my breath how much better Indy was....; )

While visiting my father in West Lafayette I ran into this guy at dinner. Super friendly. Apparently coached a little basketball back in the day... Boiler up!
When I was 14 and starting high school, my dad told me that no matter what stupid shit I did, if I ever called him at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning, in a bind, and needed him to come pick me up, that i shouldn't hesitate to call—because, he promised me, we wouldn't talk about it that night. We would eventually talk about it and deal with it—maybe even the next day—but he wanted to remove all fear in me of calling and asking for help, in the moment. It was a "no questions asked, I just want you to get home safe" policy.
I took him up on it one night, and he was true to his word.
I've never forgotten it, and I've never forgotten what would have happened to me if I hadn't trusted in it.
Sometimes, when I visit him in the Alzheimer's wing of the Veterans home, I look into his face and see that he trusts in my promise to him, too.
